    I poppered some of my starter kit robusta last weekend, turned the machine off just into the second crack.

    I am truly amazed at how thick and gooey the shots are if you use 100 percent robusta. Typically, I have been mixing a bit with my arabica roasts. By the way, that really is the beauty of the hand grinder; to be able to sprinkle different beans into the little hopper for a custom blend each time you make coffee.

    My point is; the whole robusta beans smell pretty ordinary, like old socks or something. Is that normal???

    Burnt tyres is a common aroma too.

      My first roast of the Indian BB robusta almost smelt like Vegemite mixed with rubber .

        It is interesting to note that not all roasted beans smell fantastic, and smell is not always an indication of taste. .

        It makes me think that the corporatisation of roasted bean selling through Vittoria, Gloria Jeans and the like may have lead to significant discrimination against selling those beans that dont have the trademark smell to die for when roasted.

          Old socks??? Sounds like you made a perfect roast Jason! ;D

          By the way, quite a few of our members (not me) only place the exact quantity of beans in the grinder for the cup they are making. So you see, there is also an opportunity to blend in a few other varieties in an electric grinder too!

            Unfortunately this dictum also applies to pipe tobacco (great aroma, awful taste) and cigars (awful aroma, great taste).

            But so far, no coffee bean I have roasted outside has embarrassed me with the neighbours. The aromas are great -- like those other more "meaty" wafting from the barbecue now and then.

              Ive been using up the Vietnamese robusta by adding a few beans into my morning Kimel.
              As Dennis said, 1 cups worth.
