Does it make sense to put your beans out in the sun for a period of time before roasting? This could be combined with preheating your machine.

For an interesting video on the effects of puck temperature have a look at a recent James Hoffman video at:

This time of the year no. Warmer in the house than out. Either way it is not something I would contemplate.

      I don't pre-heat anyway.

I preheat my commercial roaster because it has a lot of mass.

I never preheat a domestic roaster because they don't need it and you are going to more consistent if you always use it from room temperature anyway. Room temperature is only likely to swing 10 degree through the year. Even using a temperature probe to preheat to an exact number and opening the door for a few seconds longer to insert the beans will give a very different result and swings of 20-50 degrees difference.

The Behmor manual (shudder) is full of tips like that from low USA voltages, starting with a warmer roaster gave those with very low voltages (100v) enough time to get a roast complete. Simply not needed on our roaster at our voltages in our climate.

Leave the beans in the sun?
Nup, you will evaporate the water and change the roasting result.

Keep your beans in the pantry or similar conditions (cool dark dry), roast in normal ambient temperatures for best consistency.

Take lots of notes so you can see the difference "just one change" made.
