  • Starting to get the hang of popper roasting

Roasted some Costa Rica Tarrazu Dota Co-op this arvo which seems to have turned out quite nicely. Roasted to a CS 9.5-10. Finished at rolling 2nd in 14mins. Also did another batch that I ramped up the heat a bit quicker, finishing in 13mins at rolling 2nd, and the result looks identical to the first batch. Smells great. Ill just have to let it rest a few days before trying it.

Bill, the colour of your roast looks great! A friend recently gave me some of his Costa Rica Tarrazu that he home roasted, it was very nice to drink.

I recently did my first roast on the weekend. It was with some PNG Fairtrade.

I am currently using a friends Crazy Popper, modified with a soup can with both ends cut out - which the beans sit inside. How did you modify the heat with your popper?

Not in a very professional way - just by switching the power on and off while trying to follow the intended temp profile. Ive mounted a thermocouple in the chamber so I can see whats happening.

I intend to modify the popper though so that I can adjust the power to the heating elements via a "Mains Motor and Lamp Controller", and use a light dimmer on the fan circuit. Theres plenty of info on the internet on how to do this. Ive just pulled the popper apart to see whats required. Doesnt look too difficult - just have to get all the necessary parts now.
