I bought one kg of PNG PSC A and one kg of the PM blend from fivesenses coffee. Which should I roast first? I might try roasting for the first time on my new popcorn machine.

Re: Roast what first?
Hi Amber, if you roast the NG dont go too far, I roasted NG Fairtrade past second crack and they were overdone and bitter, next roast I went to start of 2nd crack and they were spot on.
Give it a try and then roast the other beans. Rest them for a couple of days to degas, but I usually sneak in a test brew before then!!!!!!!!!
Good luck with your roasting, run a fan over the top of the popper to cool it down and disperse the chaff and hopefully extend the roast as poppers are fairly quick...............
cheers

Re: Roast what first?
Actually, I much prefer to pull these beans well before 2nd-Crack at around CS Member Card 9. For me, this is the peak flavour point with lots of fruit and soft spices like Cinnamon and Cardamom. Pays to experiment a bit until you find the roast level that suits you bestOriginally posted by greenman link=1192294421/0#1 date=1192316178Hi Amber, if you roast the NG dont go too far, I roasted NG Fairtrade past second crack and they were overdone and bitter, next roast I went to start of 2nd crack and they were spot on.

Re: Roast what first?
Gday amberosw,
Welcome to CoffeeSnobs by the way [smiley=thumbsup.gif].....
If you buy some beans from our next BeanBay (see top L/H side of the page), before you checkout go to the "Other Stuff" button and then add the CS member Card to your order (first ones free), and then Checkout. Itll be included with your bean order then, after which youll have the common terms of reference that a lot of us use when comparing roasts. Another one of Andys great ideas 8-).....
All the best,
Mal.

Re: Roast what first?
Oil appearing after resting is common.
It is simply an indicator of a darker roast.
If you take a roast into rolling 2nd crack, you would probably see oil on the beans when you pulled them from the roaster.
When you do a lighter roast, oil may appear in the days following, but if it is a very light roast, not much(if any) will show.
In short, its normal.
