    Yep,

Id go for it too Kirsty, maybe with just one qualification..... Grab one of Andys Brown Sample Packs and use these beans as a guide to help you nail your own roasts and dial-in your machinery. That way, you will have a yardstick to give you some direction when/if things start to make little sense. All the best.....

    Mal.

    Go for it Kirsty!

Roasting your own coffee beans is sooo addictive though 8-)

    Enjoy!

    Kirsty

    Just do it!

Just buy roasted beans from time to time, suggest you try:
Coffee snobs Brown, Veneziano and/or all other site sponsors.

You need to to mix it up, ie keep using the best available roasted beans so you can compare your own results and understand what to aim for.

Besides, you need to rest you roasts [5-14 days depending on the beans and roast profile] so somehow you will always ending up to buy some.

Id also suggest you consider a coretto roaster [Bread maker + heatgun]instead of the popper. It is probably a bit more controlable, will cost about the same and makes a more useful batch [300-600g]

Kirsty I found popper roasting easy from the start.

So as far as Im concerned you arent risking too much.

I started from scratch with an Expobar machine and Macap grinder.
Prior to that I bought my coffee from cafes.

Im all for only changing one variable at a time but the way I got into this I had no choice because I dove straight into the deep end.
It wasnt that hard and my coffee got even better with practise.

yeah theres pros and cons to both really - you can start saving money AND enjoy the great fun of roasting, as well as have a new toy.. or get the toy and really give it a good run before you start roasting.. not sure what Id do.
I think lucinda is right though, I think the MDFs are still quite affordable too, especially if you take advantage of the deals that our sponsors offer, discounts etc.
    good luck and have fun!

My only concern is that the EM0480 will not be up to the demands of the gaggia. I have a gaggia classic myself and I went and got a gaggia MDF grinder as the gaggias are a bit fussy when it comes to grind used.

Can you save up a bit longer and get a grinder that is better quality and hand grind (what I did for a year or so)?

Its definitely a better idea to keep your coffee fixed while you
get accustomed to the new grinder.

I knew that before I barged ahead and did it anyway Much more
fun, but can be a tad frustrating when youve poured the tenth gusher
in a row and youve got no idea whether its the coffee, the grinder,
the tamper, or the planets out of alignment ...

New grinder + roasting own coffee = bad idea?

    Hello,

Im really sorry if this has been asked before, but I did search first I promise!

I currently have a gaggia espresso deluxe which Ive had for three years or so. Ive finally got myself to the point (after a year long enforced absence from coffee) of buying myself a grinder. Well, Ill be buying it very soon, on or before next payday. Ive decided on a Sunbeam 0480 as I really cant afford to go any better, and the reviews of it look pretty good.

My question is: I plan to also buy myself a popcorn popper and start to roast my own coffee at home soon. Is it a bad idea to start doing both new things at the same time? Should I wait until Im a bit accustomed to grinding my own beans before I start roasting, to reduce the number of variables? Or just fling myself in headfirst and hope I dont drown? I tend to charge ahead regardless, but thought I would be sensible for once and ask advice..

    Thanks!
