    Re: New Roaster

    Hi BJ and welcome!

Probably the cheapest way to get started in any effective manner is with a coretto roaster, which combines a heat gun and a breadmaker. Both of these can be often picked up from Cash Converters or similar with a total outlay of <$100. There are other home variations including bbq roasters but the coretto is probably the cheapest and arguably the more popular. From there you move into fluid bed roasters like the i-roast (~$400), and then up to drum roasters like the Gene Cafe (~$700).

Have a look through the threads on coretto roasting or do a subject search in the home roasting forum (tick the limit results to one per thread box) for coretto and youll find plenty of information.

    Good luck!

      Re: New Roaster

      Hi

I started roasting last wknd with a $35 breville crazy popper from the GoodGuys and a $3 soup tin for the chimney.

I did spend $40 on the Digital Multimeter off BeanBay but figured I would use this for any roasting that I do, if I ever progress to something else.

There is a pretty good thread here on popper roasting:

I think the choices to make are

      Popper
      Coretto
Build something, e.g. BBQ roaster etc
      Buy something

As a Newbie, it is completely fascinating, all I want to do is go home and roast.

Hi Baha, go for it, roasting your own beans is a great way to learn about coffee and the satisfaction of having roasted your own beans when a sweet shot oozes out of your portafilter into the cup.......I started with a popper (because we had one in cupboard) but it died from overuse very quickly and I set up a Corretto, this setup is fantastic, I now roast 500-600g of beans at a time and get lovely even roasts, its the way to go.
        Good luck with it.........................cheers

Thats the spirit mate - keep the passion alive!

Baha... I too roast via the revered Corretto - its a fantastically simple & controlled way, at low cost, to roast beans to a standard (with practice, of course) thats comparable with results from professional commercial grade roasters.

Heres a relatively recent post on the method, but search more & youll learn heaps:

            Re: New Roaster

Im new too, but a coffee freak

I tried a oven roast, and it worked realy well, so pretty much no cost, do a google on oven roasting coffee, basically put it in a realy hot oven, and when you see some oil its done

I just tried tonight with a pop corn maker, it was even easyer, i haven put a chiminy in yet, but i did 2 x 80 gm batches, the popcorn maker methed seems so much easyer...good luck
