Re: Resting Times: popper v corretto

Cant really make any comment on that comparison Goodies..... The batch sizes I used were in a modified popper at around 150g compared to the Corretto with up to a Kilo. All beans were then stored in appropriate sized 1-Way Valve bags with 2 x Popper batches per 250g bag and 1 x Corretto batch to 2 x 500g bags.

When it was all said and done, there was no detectable difference in the pour or the cup as time went along for identical beans. As I mentioned above, the only time differences noted was when different bean varieties were used or different roast profiles for the same bean.

I spose if you were talking vastly different quantities stored in either micro-storage bags or huge mega-storage bags then there may well be differences worth noting. At the end of the day though when youre talking about the batch sizes and quantities that are typically roasted at home, I dont think there is anything to be concerned about..... So long as your storage method and location are optimum, and this has been covered ad nauseam on plenty of previous occasions.

    All the best ,

But a question comes to mind. Do smaller batches and larger batches need the same amount of resting time. ie. Does a 500g batch of beans from a corretto and a batch from a commercial 10kg roaster (Same Bean and roast profile) required the same resting time for the beans to degas?

From some of the experiments Ive fooled around with, the manner of roasting doesnt seem to have much impact on the time required to properly rest the bean. Bean variety and roast profile to a lesser extent, seem to be the main contributors....

Ive find with most of my roasts that day 1-3 they are fairly acidic, heaps of frothy crema then they settle and improve each day after that reaching their peak between 7-14 days depending on bean, that is of course if they last that long!!

My main question is this:  Do beans roasted for longer periods (corretto) require longer to degas?  Can they smell pretty wrong for the first day or so?
Ive been wondering about this too, here is my thinking:
When i roast with a popper, Ive noticed that the grind is much lighter than the surface of the bean, maybe the inside of the bean is not fully roasted, so the coretto roasts right through, and there is more of the bean that needs to degas?

This is from limited experience, ive only done 2 roasts on the coretto, so just learning...

I dont think the roasting process would affect the time the beans need to degas, each bean would have a different characteristic, some my be great after a days rest where others like the Monsoon Malabar need at least 7 days resting.
Try cupping the beans each day and take note of the change in flavour as they degas.

    Resting Times: popper v corretto

Ive just converted from a popper to a corretto.  My first batch of 300g indian mysore reached FC at 8:30 and SC at 13:50.  A little quick.  I pulled it just on the verge of a rolling SC.

It rested 15 hours in a one-way valved bag.  I cracked it open and it didnt smell that good.  I ground 20g and it smelled even worse...

My main question is this:  Do beans roasted for longer periods (corretto) require longer to degas?  Can they smell pretty wrong for the first day or so?

When popper roasting, a day of resting was usually ok and the beans would smell fantastic.

Am I missing something or will the beans come good in a day or so?

Day 3 without a coffee and stuggling...
Working...
