  • First two Popper roasts

Hi guys, Id appreciate some feedback and advice on my first two roasts.

After my portafilter starting leaking on my Sunbeam two weeks ago, I came across the CS site in an attempt to find out how to fix it. I think Ive just found a new hobby...
Well, after a lot of searching and reading Ive picked myself up a Bratz branded Crazy Popper from Target at the knock down price of $24, and tonight Ive after I received my starter pack, Ive given my first two roasts ago.

The first roast was using the Indian Kappi Royale. To be honest, I had a watch with me but didnt record the exact times as I was more interested in listenining for the FC and SC.

My second roast was about 15mins later and using Uganda Bugiso AA.

The difference between the two roasts was that the second roast I could definately hear the SC commencing and stopped the roast when I could tell the SC getting into a roll. The first roast I wasnt too sure when the FC finished and the SC started. All up, Im pretty sure from start to finish was roughly 7mins for both roasts.

I guess my queriy is in when you guys talk about the FC, are you guys talking about when the first bean starts to crack, or somewhere in the middle of the first crack starting and finishing?

Where to from here? Well more roasting, chase up the Krups service centre on my order of non-pressurised replacement baskets, and to convince my wife that its all worth the effort (and the expense of a new grinder!)

Hi Hal, congrats on your first roasts, they look a hell of a lot better than the first ones I did, mine were very dark, very oily and tasted like charcoal but it gave me a yardstick for future roasts. 7 mins is a good time and your roasts look pretty good.
when you hear the beans first start to crack that is the start of fc, when they take off and really start to crack en-masse thats called rolling first crack thats when you try and ease off the heat and stretch the time until the first stage of second crack (which is a lot quieter and harder to hear than first). A lot of people tend to pull their roast at the start of 2nd or just into it, depending on your flavour preferences. Some beans like to go into second crack a little further. 2nd crack is the same as first initially you will hear to odd crack and then they will accelerate to rolling second.
When your wife tastes the home roasted, home brewed coffee you produce you will win her over, and she will realise the need for a good grinder which is the most essential element of good espresso!!!
    Have gun..................cheers gm

      Welcome to CS!

Both roasts look good Hal especially for a first roast.

How did you cool the beans down? Its important that you try and cool them down as quickly as possible so that they dont keep roasting themselves. I use a colander over a bucket. The bucket has a hole in the side at the bottom through which I insert the vaccum hose. Down to room temp in 60 secs.

Keep it up, looks like youre doing a pretty good job there. The taste will be your final judge.

      Happy roasting, and welcome!

        Re: First two Popper roasts

Thanks guys. I cooled these down manually using two colanders and agitating between the two. I would say it took well over a minute, maybe even two, to get them cool enough to handle. Ive seen another thread that talks about a simple cooling method of an exhaust fan and bucket type arrangement, so might have to get to Bunnings over the weekend.
I plan to give them both a go tonight (24hrs after roast) as I cant wait too much longer. The roast was fun but I want to taste them....
