    Welcome to Coffee Snobs.

    Roast at night.
The cold should help prolong the roast times.

A chimney would be good so you can fit in a few more beans and help with the airflow.

Try to start with a 100g batch and see how it goes.

You wont know how your popper behaves until you get the first roast under your belt.

Springbox if you havent taken the baseplate off the fan wont help too much.

Have a close look and youll see that half the vents are baffled (restricting airflow).
I recommend removing the baseplate and replacing it with plastic flyscreen mesh.
You could cut most of the baseplate away and use the remainder to hold the mesh in place when you screw it back on.

As for into and out of the oven.... I dont think thats a good idea.
You want a steady increase in temperature.
Even holding steady is OK I believe after FC but you dont want the bean temp to drop which will happen between the oven and the popper.

Re: Good roast profile for Crazy Popper??

    Hi me again,
Ok heres what I do -I live in Brisbane and roast outside usually on a Saturday morning about 9am - this Saturday the ambient was 25C - I have a 1200W Breville Popper which I have attacked it with a 20mm holesaw, it is now truly well ventilated both below and on the sides.

I have a long extension cord, It is raised 20cm off the table on a wire grid at an angle and I have a fan blowing directly upwards from underneath the popper.

I still only manage 3m45seconds to first crack and after 5m 15 theres a lot of smoke.

Of late I have been preheating beans in a fan forced oven - I put them in at 80C and then turn the heat up and I remove the beans after 6 minutes when they measure about 160C and then put them direct into the popper for 4 minutes..

Does this sound ok or am I now baking the beans in the oven, and can I now say that I have 6 minutes + 3m 45 seconds to first crack??

    Appreciate any assistance.

Wow,.. thats a long time for a popper,.. something doesnt sound right there.  What brand is your popper Kevviek? knowing that might help CSrs figure out whats going on, or at least give you some comparisons with others using the same one.

I wouldnt advise covering the chimney at all,.. I did that (unknowingly) while trying something out and the whole thing stopped working mid roast  .  I thought I had burnt it out,.. but luckily once it cooled right down,. it was fine to go again.

Re: Good roast profile for Crazy Popper??

I picked up a Crazy popper on evil Bay for $17 last week and tried my first roast this morning with some Nicaragua High Grown Bold beans I got in my green BeanBay starter pack.

Ambient temp was about 18 degrees, after about 6 minutes I had heard a couple of small cracks, but nothing more. I put a cover on the chimney and after another 5-6 minutes nothing seemed to be happening so I switched it off. The end result has a number of beans that are really still quite light but most look something like a medium roast.

Im guessing in my case Im going to need to run it for longer than 12-13 minutes but am worried about burning out the motor if I cover up the chimney for too long. Any guidance on that?

What do you reckon attaching a small PC power supply fan to the side of the popper? Youd probably need some outlet holes on the other side.

    Slow down, deep breaths.
You know you need to get more air into it and a fan will help.
    So dont give up yet.

Well youve all outdone me - I have a 1200w popper which I have been modifying steadily but to no real avail - last night I bought an 1100 W popper from the Warehouse for $19 - I thought this would do something being 100w less power - got it home attacked it with a 20mm holesaw and finally was so tired I had to try it out - threw in 100g Ethiopian Limu switched it on and 3minutes 30 seconds later I had smoke and dark oily beans - no good at all - adittedly I am in Brisbane and I didnt have a fan nearby, no elevation etc etc - as I said I was tired.... but also despondent now ... SOWETO now I ask myself ?
