  • My First (Successful) Roast

    Hey CSs

Well today, home with the flu, I had another go at roasting.  This was my 6th (?) attempt and I think I finally have got an OK roast (fingers crossed for a few days and hopefully I can taste by then too).

Ive turned a few roasts into lovely charcoal drawings (almost!) and the heat gun has failed on me pre-first crack once (hello pedestal fan), and the others have sprinted into second crack (but i still drank those).  Oh and I baked one roast too, and it smelled and tasted truely revolting (its in the garden now).

So this one was Ethiopian Sidamo and I got rolling first crack at 9 minutes and I stopped the roast just into second crack at 13 minutes.

Those beans look delectably delicious Sanch.... 8-)

It does take a few roasts to get a handle on how ones specific Corretto setup performs, so in my book, youre doing great [smiley=thumbsup.gif].

When you roast your next batch of the Sidamo, try to stretch the time to Rolling FC out to about the 11-12 minute margin and then slow it down again so that the first few snaps of SC occur at around 6:00 minutes after that; then pull the roast and cool the beans after 10 seconds into Rolling SC. Ive found that this profile produces a rich, fruity brew with lots of dark chocolate for Sidamo crops of the past so if you enjoy the dark chocolate aftertaste in a coffee, this should get you close....

      Cheers,
      Mal.

        Re: My First (Successful) Roast

        Thanks Mal!

Yep thats what I was aiming for with the times...a little bit more tweaking with the HG distance and I should have it close hopefully (and unfortunately run out of Sidamo green beans too ) Luckily Ive got some new beans coming soon from this months beanbay. mmm hopefully this roast will taste like your description (sounds good!)

Its a bit fiddley getting the heat/distance worked out with the corretto; I think this is because with my tripod setup the HG doesnt always aim at the same place. Its easy to get the height the same (i reference the distance of the HG tip to the top of the BM housing) but it was only 1.5cm vertical difference between this roast (FC at 8min) and the baked one (FC at 17min). Though I now have a fan which could be blowing some of the HGs air-stream away. I think I might see how this current setup goes and maybe ditch (I mean return ) the tripod and make a more solid HG stand. Oh and I love the DMM thermocouple probe. I got to drill some holes in the BM a few weekends ago which was really fun!

And in the last post I forgot to say thanks to pmerk (and his lovely wife!) for the bread machine.

          All sounds good Sanch.... 8-)

Will be very interested to read your cupping impressions of the Sidamo after 2-3 days rest. It probably does better with 4-5 days rest but Ive tried a few batches after only 2 days and the resulting brews have still been very nice, if just slightly gassy and a little bright.

          Have fun ,
          Mal.

            Yeah!

Well done Sanch, a tasty looking roast, youll have to let us know how it goes in the cup.

Youll find the DMM invaluable, for knowing what temps FC & SC occur at and especially using it to determine the rate rise between FC & SC.

I agree with your comments regarding the positioning of the HG and definately recommend a more fixed/repeatable approach.
There are plenty of ways to achieve this and plenty of Corretto posts here that show how to achieve it.

            Enjoy it.

Sounds like youre on the way, Sanch.

My best friends in my Corretto setup are my HG stand (old desk lamp stand - very easy to use, accurate, flexible) and multi-meter (even with melted plastic bits ;D - since wrapped gaffer tape around the parts that dont poke through to the BM for insulation). Once I hit FC I pull the HG back and (with one hand on the HG) watch the temp gently increase over 6 mins to SC. (I, like you, found that slow ramp up to SC the hardest thing to control at first, with that rush to SC -"NO, that CANT be SC already!" ;D)

Probably a more solid HG base will make it easier for you, although it looks as if you are getting the hang of it. Congrats and enjoy.

The Sidamo looks good Sarch, looks like you are on the right track to great roasts, get the DMM as soon as possible, this is an invaluable tool to monitor your roasts. Ill look forward to seeing some more of your roasts soon.......................cheers gm

                  Re: My First (Successful) Roast

                  Thanks for the comments guys!!!

Ill try the Sidamo in a few days but Im still all flu ridden so I might not be able to taste much (well, thats my excuse at the moment...my palate is pretty underdeveloped but im trying )

Yep I love the DMM (have had it for a while) I did a few roasts without it and was kinda roasting blind; its a very useful tool! I was going to make a solid HG stand a few weekends ago but didnt really know what i wanted out of it (e.g how far up and down it should go). Now ive got an idea of that I can look into building one. Yay, i get to use the drill again!!!

Now back to the PNG peaberry roasted 5 days ago for my arvo coffee...

Sanch that roast looks great. Its taken me a few roast to get the hang of my set up, H/G pot roaster similiar to corretto probably larger .I have been tweaking it, and just bought a new bosch heatgun after my Ryobi gave me the shytz, low grade components in it hopefully the bosch will do better.
