  • Best Mild Roast

    Hi,

I am a popper roaster and have only recently managed to extend the time to first crack to nearly 6 minutes - I am not going to try to extend that although with winter coming on it may just happen.

Anyway - my question - which Coffee or group of coffees is best roasted at a Mild Roast?

Im guessing at a total Roasting time of about 7 minutes, and Im not fond of a dark roasted coffee - I am interested in African Coffees ideally but any advice is appreciated.

    Regards,

    David

    Re: Best Mild Roast

    Gday David,

Probably any of the Low-ish Grown varietals will be ok, such as some Sth American Brazil, Peru and Colombian types. Some Costa Rica low altitude varieties or for that matter, any Central American Low Grown.

Ditto for a lot of PNG and Indonesian beans, some from the Continent too such as Tiger Mountain, Mysore Nuggets. Not too many Africans though but some of the Rwanda beans Andy has been able to get would be OK, same for anything around the Mt. Elgon region of Uganda.

Most Island Grown beans will be very nice as a medium roast too but can be a bit expensive by the time we get hold of them here. I wouldnt go for any of the high grown Africans though such as most from Ethiopia, Yemen and most grown in Kenya as these will be too acidic and bright as a medium roast, for my palate anyway. There are also those beans available from the Mountain Top plantation here in Oz, all very nice mild beans with lots of flavour thanks to excellent quality control during processing.

There will be plenty more no doubt but thats what I could think of off the top of my head but should be enough to get you going hopefully. All the best ,

    Mal.

My wife likes milder roasts and I usually use Colombian or Honduran beans for her, they give a nice smooth yet tasty brew.

          Thats interesting...

I pulled a Honduran just shy of 2C and found it a bit grassy... so the next batch I hit 2C just slightly and bingo. Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate!
