Re: Two-Day Roasting Course - any interest?
Im seriously interested in this, although if it was on two days over the same weekend, Id be unable to come. Im spending about $50-60 a week on roasted beans, and Id rather learn a bit about roasting my own from a professional before I take the plunge!

Re: Two-Day Roasting Course - any interest?
Dennis, thanks for a well run and very informative workshop. Aside from the many learnings Ive taken away from the workshop I certainly had a lot of fun meeting and working with other CSers on the day. Not to mention the copious amounts of coffee we drank during the workshops!
Prior to your workshop offering I looked up other places with similar roasting courses but none I could see offered the same amount of "hands-on" activities you included. Certainly none of them had the extensive list of exercises included in your course.
For those considering this, regardless if youre just roasting with a Corretto, Gene or IR2 I would thoroughly recommend this. The real eye-opener for me was how different each roast came out, using the same bean given a minor tweak in the roasting process. The opportunity to cup our own roast was a great exercise in seeing how well (or bad) our roasts came out. Until now, Ive always only ever described what Ive liked in simple terms (I like it or I dont). I have a long way in training my palate but now I know where to start and how to do it properly! The Nez Du cafe kit, distinguishing the differences in citrus flavours and the cupping notes have all been very useful.
Thanks again!
Cheers - Andrew

Re: Two-Day Roasting Course - any interest?
Stay tuned for future dates - probably late in September.
The next one will run over the same weekend rather than two days one week apart.
Cost will be $450 per person for the course - increase is due to:
a) More hours now included in the course
b) Less participants - strictly limited to 5 people
c) The first course was cheap as chips due to it being a first time offer. Still an incredibly competitive price!
Only offered in Sydney, and as far as Im aware, the only two-day course of its kind available in Australia.
If youre seriously interested, send me an expression of interest via pm.

Re: Two-Day Roasting Course - any interest?
Just some reflections on the content for those that took part and for others who may do so in the future...
DAY ONE
Everyone recd a folder - around 30 pages of info included...dont forget to read through it from time to time
Green beans - the good, the bad and the ugly with a close up look at bean defects
We spoke about different roasting technologies and how they might effect the outcome
Hands on with Dudley Diedrich - what its like to toss a couple of kilos of beans into a commercial roaster and take control
Everyone took samples of all the roasts home with them - did you try them, pick a favourite, or decide how you might change future roasts?
Profiles were recorded, graphed and sent - were there any surprises there?
DAY TWO
We ground the profiles and matched them with agtron tiles
Looked at flavour/aroma wheel and became familiar with that
Tasted the difference between citric acid compared to orange, grapefruit, mandarin and lemon
Tasted some raw chocolate
Tested our nose with the full Le Nez du Cafe kit
Tried traditional cupping of the profiles roasted
Were surprised with how different they tasted using an aeropress or as espresso, and finally...
Discussed what we might change or how we would use the roasts either as an SO or in a blend
Hope you all enjoyed it - I still have some cleaning up to do!

Very sorry to hear that redzone.
This workshop will go ahead, regardless of the numbers, as I know one person has already booked flights - looks like we have two vacancies now.
