    Thanks for your suggestions!

    Ok, made a chimney

    was easy.

Storing coffee in a large tupperware container post roast. preroast, in the bag it came in

Need a members card so i can check the colour of my roast properly

First batch seems to be a success. Will post a more thorough journal about it a little later in a seperate post.

Youll definitely need a chimney. I used a stainless steel milkshake cup with the bottom cut out. Perfect fit & they only cost a couple of bucks.
Re: storage, as mentioned, youll get the cloth bags when you start buying green beans from Beanbay. Grab yourself some one way valve bags from Beanbay or Coffeeparts for storing your roasted stuff.

I started out roasting in the standard crazy popper complete with top and had no problems, except for the beans jumping out around FC. A chimney is a good idea simply to stop this as well as allowing a bit bigger roast load.
Brown paper bags are good for storing small quantities of green beans if you dont have cloth bags.
Its not a great idea to keep them in the plastic bags they come in for any length of time.
All the best with your roasting. Its great fun and very addictive.

    Cheers,
    Alan

    Hey Raphec,

IF you meant storing the green beams, then all the above post information is good.
However, if you meant storing the roasted beans, that is another story altogether, cos air is not good for them at all, and they give off gas which ideally needs to be able to get out of the container. However the initial batch sizes that you will be doing are relatively small, so suggest store your roasted beans in a oversize tupperware type container initially.

I would recommend fitting the chimney before you try any roasting with your popper.

    Ah.

Well, the cloth bag is a good thing.
The odds are that you will go through the starter pack in reasonably quick time, so storing shouldnt really be a problem yet. Perhaps stick with how they came for the moment.

If the roasting bug bites you as it has many of us, the next step will likely be participating in the next green beanbay. Beans there are sold in 2.5kg lots which all come in their own cloth bag.

Personally, I use a mixture of the bags they come in and 5kg basmati rice bags (once the rice is gone) for storage. The rice bags might not be as good as the cloth bags, but I find the zip seal and 5kg capacity works really well for me.

starter pack came with 4 plastic snap lock bags, inside a cloth bag.

A chimney helps, but is not essential.

Just be aware that coffee takes longer than popcorn (what it was designed for), so if it has a plastic attachement on the top like my old B&D popper had, better to remove it as it will probably start to melt.

Storing beans is really better in a cloth bag that allows breathing. In plastic bags or containers, they can sweat. Short amounts of time in plastic is OK (away from heat/light), but bags are better. What they come in is a good starting point. I assume starter packs come in small bags?

    Brett.

excitement, anticipation. First roast this weekend

Starter pack of green beans off CoffeeSnobs - check
Cascade 1100 watt air popper - check
    Steel collander - check

So is a chimney definitely necessary? I can make one out of a can, but just wondering if its really needed.

Also, is storing the beans in a tupperware like container ok? or is a freezer bag better?
