Re: Oils appearing after 1-2 days after roasting
Havent taken any photos - might do that with the next batch. Ive been roasting a few different SO (Brazilian Santos, Ethiopia Golacha, Columbian SHB) and seem to get the same result. Thanks for the tips.

Re: Oils appearing after 1-2 days after roasting
I pull most of my roasts just on the start of second crack and rarely get any oil on the beans after a few days rest.
If I go to rolling second and then pull roast the oils appear then after a few days.

Got any photos of your roasts? They dont happen to be Monsooned Malabar beans are they? Monsooned malabar are especially light coloured at the same stage of the roast as other beans.

Re: Oils appearing after 1-2 days after roasting
Thanks for the tips - good to here that Im doing something right. I seem to get oils on what I perceive as light roasts usually 2-3 min after 1st crack. Im using an iRoast2 and havent really been able to hear the 2nd crack...

Re: Oils appearing after 1-2 days after roasting
ThommO, are you sure it is a medium roast? Are the beans light brown?
Id be surprised if oils appeared on a light roast, though some beans may produce it.

Re: Oils appearing after 1-2 days after roasting
I hate having to refer to "general rules of thumb" where coffee is concerned but the lighter the roast, the longer it will be before you notice the presence of surface oil, (if any at all for a very light/medium roast).Originally posted by NewToEspresso link=1213679273/0#2 date=1213689079One question about that, Mal, if the roast is on the lighter side, say pulled out at first snaps of second crack or just before, will it exhibit the oils as well? The reason Im asking is I only tend to get oils come out when I take beans into close or on rolling second crack and Im wondering if my lighter roasts are ok given I dont see oils appearing at all.
So long as the roast batch produces beans that are roasted evenly all the way through, and you love the end results, thats all that is really important NtE..... Doesnt hurt to try some experimentation though, just so as you gain an understanding of the end results of roast batches taken to different roast depths, and then noting your observations and impressions. This all adds to your experience and knowledge (even if you dont like the outcomes of some of the roast profiles youve used) and thats going to help you as you continue to roast your own beans at home.
Cheers mate

Welcome thomm0.... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
Yes mate, this is perfectly normal and indicative of a roast that is nigh on perfect. So, what ever you did with this one, do the same with the rest and youll always be close to the money. Happy roasting mate

Oils appearing after 1-2 days after roasting
Ive just started roasting with a iRoast 2 and find that in a medium roast the oils start coming out 1-2 days after roasting. It appears unevenly on the surface of the beans. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong.Tags: None
