Gene Cafe - Washed Beans

Thanks guys. I'll try not to get too hung up on the chaff.
These three were roasted the same night with the gene cafe, all similar technique.
Top Left: CS Brazil Yellow Bourbon Especial
Top Right: CS Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Naturals
Bottom: CS Ethiopia Guji Wamena Gr1
The top two look ideal to me. Bottom one not so much...
Haven't tried it in cup yet, they still have a few more days to rest.

I agree with Whorl, don't get too hung-up on a bit of chaff.
It won't make much difference to the cup if any. Scratch a bit of chaff off and taste it, at most, a little like straw, hay or cornflakes and will be pretty subtle and certainly buried when ground with coffee. It takes a LOT of chaff to make a kilo!
On my commercial roaster the beans crash down from about 400mm high on every revolution, it also has a big 3 phase fan drawing air through the drum. A much more violent experience compared to the gentle Gene Cafe which has light airflow and a softer tumbling action in agitation.
Different beans will have different chaff characteristics and washed or natural doesn't matter in how they behave.

I certainly wouldn't continue roasting just to remove chaff. Roast to they level you want.
However, what method are you using to roast with? This could have some impact on it, as there seems to be some variation in how people are roasting in the Gene. Preheat, varying temperature and time, setting temp and stopping when done...

Hi,
Thank-you for your reply. I guess I’m just not use to seeing that much chaff still stuck on every bean. Tipping between the colanders will not remove the chaff. Will take a picture the next time I roast.
Seeing if any one has tips with roasting a washed bean on the gene cafe, do you roast it differently to your natural beans?

Also only a novice with the Gene. But any particular reason you want to completely remove the chaff? Aside from a bit messy in the grinder, doesn't affect taste.
Alternatively, continually tipping between a couple of colanders in front of a fan helps to remove some if you really want to.

Gene Cafe - Washed Beans
Hi Guys,
Still very new to roasting. I'm currently roasting with a Gene Cafe and a makeshift bean cooler. Still learning and getting good results on natural processed beans. However, I find when I attempt to roast washed beans, first crack normally happens very late and at the end of first crack there is still plenty of chaff stuck on the bean. If I continue to roast to get rid of the chaff, I end up toasting the bean.
Does any one have any tips that they could share with me? Particularly for roasting a washed bean on the Gene Cafe? Any feedback/advice will be greatly appreciated.
Currently I have the following washed beans from Andy.- Tanzania Ngorongoro AA
- Ethiopia Guji Wamena Gr1
Cheers Phu.
