Hey there, I have myself a crazy popper and managed to get my hands on some green beans today from Nicaragua Matagalpa. I have never roasted before and was hoping somebody could give some advice on the best way to deal with this bean (eg. medium roast/dark roast, etc) and what you would predict the times would be for first crack and second crack (geelong - average temp outside now about 15C). No thermometer at this stage... but should be arriving in the next three or four weeks.
Out of interest is this a handy single origin blend for espresso or will it need to be blended with something?
Any help would be kindly appreciated.

The Brazil would be a good starter.
first crack at around 10min mark 190-195C
Ease back on heat after fc--2nd crack 5-6 mins later
stop at start of 2nd crack a quickly cool
should give a nice roast

Any suggestions on which bean to try with first?

I use the Ozito as well, there are better guns out there but the Oz is cheap & 3 yr warranty is good.
I initially roasted on high, with the bowl of the corretto uncovered. Used a camera tripod to hold the gun & give height control to vary the heat. Found the nose of the gun got pretty hot, though, from heat coming back from the bowl. Some use a fan blowing on the gun to alleviate this a bit. Important to run the gun on low for a little while immediately after the roast, to let the temp come down a bit more gradually than just shutting it off.
Have been using a small square of cement sheet as a lid, with a hole for the HG, & a hole for the air to escape. Have found it is a little harder to hear the cracks, but they are still audible; and I can now use the HG on low, which is a bit quieter too. The plastic on the gun doesnt get too hot now either.
I use the tripod out of a cheapo "laser level" set (about $25 at bunnings, where I work) with a wooden contraption on top to hold the HG. I found this tripod is lower than the camera one, so it can sit on the table next to the corretto. Freed up the camera tripod too.

I had the Ozito.
500*C
Generic Starting Profile
Aim for FC (approx 190*) at 10 minutes.
Then SC (approx 20* more) at 16 minutes.
Stop and start cooling as soon as possible (until you get the hang of your routine) because they will continue to roast.
A pedestal from a discarded fan works well as a gun holder.

Tips for first ever roast?
Hi, Im hoping someone can direct me to the right threads to look at for:
a) first type of forgiving green bean to try roasting from Green BeanBay to get the hang of things
b) basic profile guidelines for that bean to help with experimenting? I have no idea of what a basic profile should begin at.
Im using a Corretto (under construction, nearly there), Ozito heatgun with settings at 300*C and 500*C, Digitech QM-1462 DMM, fibreglass sleeve insulated flexible thermocouple, and a Remington BM100 with adequate kneading cycles. Ive had to order in a drill-holder - none of the 7 major hardware chains stock them any more!
