  • Roasting MTC Bin549

Im not sure have i done the right thing to this bean. CAn anyone give me some comment? THe coffees taste alright.

My roasting profile for my last few times are:

It takes ~7mins30secs to the FC. The FC finished at 2-3mins after. The SC come ~6mins after the FC finished. I normally stop my roast at the beginning of SC.

Does it look right? Everyone please give comment.

Here is the pic of my roast. Does it go too dark? I reckon it is between CS10 and CS11

      Re: Roasting MTC Bin549

The time to FC sounds too fast to me.

This bean appears to have a very high moisture content. Ive only done 2 roasts of this so far, but my best one was when I dried the beans out on a baking tray in the sun for 2 days before roasting. The beans lost about 10% of their weight by doing this, and the beans colour became lighter - closer to the colour of most of my other beans. Then I used the profile below:

6:00 to 150C drying stage - beans should be an even yellow colour before progressing further,
      10:15 start of FC
15:15 end - CS 9.5 with a slight oil sheen on the beans

The result was very impressive from this roast, so Ill have to try to recreate it again sometime.

        Bill: Thx for your advice.

But my problem is Im using IMex for roasting. I cant really control the temperature. SO how can i slow down the roast? Also, how can u tell my bean have a high moisture content? I really want to know about this cos my roast doesnt smell right at all. Dont know whether it is due to the moisture contect. But they do taste well. Maybe i should consider using "coretto" for roasting.

Well I assume it has a high moisture content due to the beans being a very dark green colour - much darker than any of my other beans. Also the MTC Bin 35 has been described on here as having a high moisture content, and this bean is a similar dark colour to the Bin 549.

Im not familiar with the Imex, so cant help you there. Can you increase the airflow through it somehow? Or roast at a cooler time of day?

Hi Sugilun, I have done 1 fantastic roast with this bean and it does take a long time to achieve 1CR I think it took me nearly 11min in my pot roaster, then I finished it at the very first signs of 2CR .
One thing I  noticed is that they finish darker, than other beans I have done at this roast level.Probably because they started much darker.
I cant help with the IMEX but maybe a pedestal fan to blow away some heat might help to stretch your roast times.I am yet to try a roast in my new corretto once I have got the hang of it I will try to do one.
