  • Brazil Yellow Bourbon bean roasting advice needed

Heya, acquired some beans re the title and am finding roasting them a bit tricky in my correto set-up.

Mainly, because they don't seem to exhibit a noticeable crack!

I took my attention away during the first roast and caught them approaching 220c without any really audible cracking that sounded anything more than the usual outliers before a rolling crack. I dropped them when I saw the temps (which got there well before the 12 minutes I try for a normal roast) and they looked okay, but do have a scorched flavour and lost any subtle notes they might have had

Kept my eye on Artisan this time and dropped at 214c this time and with less power in the heat gun to slow the roast, but there was still very little audible crack.

This batch looks and smells MUCH better, but I'm just wondering if this is normal behaviour for this variety and if there are any tips?

Need more info to be able help really. What was the processing method, grade or screen size, and when were they harvested. It could be due to a number of factors. The most likely are that it’s old or past crop, low quality and/or pulp natural process.

Use the forum search function to search for Brasil Yellow Bourbon and you can turn up threads like this:

I've roasted these beans in a Coretto in the distant past without any problem.

For what its worth, in my experience 220° C in 12 minutes is waaaaaaay too fast, all of my roast times are approx 14 minutes to first crack which usually occurs at close to 200° C (its very audible) according to my temp monitor DMM, then approx 5 more minutes to 225° which is pretty close to second crack, all of my roasts are pretty dark, but certainly not burnt.
        Slow down.🙂
As an after thought this is for a roast of 750 grams of green beans.

Well, I just sampled some of the batch from last night and it's muuuuuuuch better. Yes, they are the Brazil Yellow Bourbon Especial beans mentioned above, I missed that in the search somehow (it was late, and maybe my spelling ) and that seems to reflect my own experience. The fact the beans are smaller than others I have roasted perhaps should have been the giveaway that a slower roast was in order. Good to know that quiet and relatively little cracking being heard is the rule with these beans.

Well, the coffee this morning was good with just an overnight rest, so should be GREAT in a few days!

          Thanks for the responses
