  • Caffeine in the smoke??

So, if you havnt already seen it, Ive made a kick arse roaster... cept it roasts about 500gm at a time... and creates a great deal of smoke... and my partner Marion keeps asking me if Della is possibly getting "caffeined up" because of the smoke?!?

So, a serious question? When Del comes inside stinking of coffee roasting, is she also full of caffeine?? (after a particularly mad evening the last time we roasted together I thought Id better double check with people on this fact rather than just saying "shell be right!")

Theres always going to be a bit of it in the smoke, but if there is good ventilation, you shouldnt have much of a problem. With regards to the smoke, youre probably better not inhaling too much of it anyways, since its probably carcinogenic in some way/shape/form, not to mention your body doesnt take well to too much smoke. You roast in the shed with the door open I assume? If so, maybe have a floor fan to help circulate fresh air in, and force excess smoke out.

We discussed this a long time ago, check this:

I feel the caffine when roasting, hence would keep kids away.

Yep, been roasting outside now, and keeping Del well away from the setup - after shes switched the switch of course...she loves that bit.

Aside from the smoke, the biggest danger for small children would be the heat. You can get some pretty nasty burns if you make contact with that stockpot of yours.

Youre not wrong there - it gets hot. Like hot!

So Im guessing I shouldnt let her run the roast unattended, while playing with knives, matches, and cleaning products, next to the pool anymore? Is that what youre saying??

            Nunu, thats just crazy talk!

I have to agree with the smoke thing. Since Ive been heat gunning it (which I love and can never go back to the popper) I have noticed the smoke and have had to go out doors. After some big sessions I have felt a bit weird (i.e. a bit like I used to when I was busy misspending my youth). The weird thing is I am now addicted to the smell of roasting as well as the coffee.

Every kid has to run with scissors at least once in their lives, survival of the fittest.

Telling them whats going on, instead of having to punish them once theyve done something wrong, or them learning the hard way is the better option by far. I think I didnt go a day without being punished at home for something or other.

Educate, dont let them educate themselves...

Well said Nunu. Its easy to tell Del about things too, plus its surprising how strong a young childs self-preservation instinct is, once they know something is dangereous after an explanation, they dont just go doing it (like most people expect). If I start driving without my seatbelt, Del shouts her head off at me!! Because she has learnt about it.

We cracked out another roast last night, felt like some lemon highnotes so did a Yerg, Tiger Moutnain, Brazil blend at 40,40,20. Del and I walked round the garden, stayed away from the roaster, and appart from the facefull of smoke I got when I lifted the pot lid at 25mins we were well and truly clear of it.

About being addicted to the smoke, I think youde want to be carefull because Ive heard there are some other "nasties" in the smoke becuase of burning chaff when using a HG. Im happy with the 77Roast now becuase it does my stirring for me! Sweet.

Now all it needs is a smoke extractor.

Dont drive without your seatbelt! Its dangerous and illegal (this message brought to you courtesy of the RTA).

                      Re: Caffeine in the smoke??

Wish I had of read this thread before my roasting ordeal last Sunday. After reading Ken Davids home roasting book describing the different smells of coffee smoke during the roasting process, I parked myself next to the roaster the entire time to familiarise myself with the different smoke profiles. Ended up with quite a head ache and felt like Id downed a few red bulls in a row.

Not to mention smoke is carcinogenic by nature. You could have even been subject to minor corbon monoxide poisoning. Dont stand over the roaster, simply sample the aroma by waving your hand towards yourself. That way, you only get a sample of the smoke, not the whole plume.

                          Re: Caffeine in the smoke??

I always roast outside and unless the wind is strong enough I set a pedestal fan up next to the roasting pot to blow the smoke away. I remember going out after one of my earlier roasts and several people commented that I smelt like I had just escaped from an industrial blaze

Its more of a problem with a hand held heat gun which is another reason why I will eventually setup a bbq roaster.
