Hi All,
Yesterday I did a maiden seasoning roast on a new (old) Glaster Roaster:
https://coffeesnobs.com.au/forum/equ...r-maiden-roast
I couldn’t resist giving it another crack today with some well aged (5 years) Ethiopian Sidamo!
Aside from the start, when preheating dragged due pilot error (turning on the fan helped majorly!) the roast went very well. I have a heatsnob inbound to allow data logging for more detailed profiling but for today I had a thermocouple inserted into the drum hooked up to a DMM. The 100mm thermocouple was a little on the short side so was more accurately reading ET instead of BT but the temps around milestone moments of the roast indicate it wasn’t far off. I was going to buy a bead type or longer probe but I think I’ll just stick to the trusty beanbay one as consistency between roasts using the same set up is good enough.
There are few pics but I also put together a YouTube video that I’ll link below that provides a little more detail on workflow and operation.
The Roast
Green: 300g Ethiopian Sidamo
Ambient temp: 17.7C
Charge temp: 108C
Turning Point: 57secs @ 62C
First Crack: 14:03 mins @ 185C
Develop Time: 3:56 mins
Second Crack: Not reached
Total Roast Time: 17:59 mins
Yield: 257g
Not expecting much from 5 y o beans but hoping for a little brightness and a hint of floral, but we’ll see how we go…

Cheers,
WG
