  • not much gassing-off...

hi, i just did a roast yesterday, a nice two cup batch of my mountain estate "fancy"...
i was wondering, how much gass should be produced by freshly roasted beans usually?
i just had a look at the bag i sealed them in, and overnight they have barely puffed the bag out at all, and i squeezed the air out almost compleatly before sealing it...
i have read that most of you try your beans each day, unless your meant to leave them for a week or two i dont see that the wonderfull one way valve is ever going to get used, as it takes a bit of preasure build up to get any gas or air passing through it.... :-?
    whats the go, Snobs?

How much gas depends on how much you roasted, depth of roast, and lots of other stuff.

Same for the bags not puffing up - lots of reasons...eg. because its not sealed properly (try using an impulse sealer), underdeveloped roast, overdeveloped roast (read as oily),time from roast to bag, valve defect, bean temperament, etc.

      Gday gmeddy....

Have to add my support for Dennis recommendation to use an Impulse Sealer for properly sealing the bags. When the bags are brand new the Zip-Locks seem to be able to seal quite well but after a couple of reuses, their effectiveness falls off rather quickly.

I also bag my roast batches while they are still warm too, around 40C, and then immediately seal using the Impulse Sealer. My IS uses a heater ribbon of only 3mm in width so its possible to reseal bags with it four and up to five times. To be honest, I wonder what I ever did without it....

      Cheers,
      Mal.

Oh theyre great. And not too expensive really!
Unless of course you want the foot pedal model with the large 20mm sealing strip.

Have a look on the bay of e under impulse sealers to get an idea.

              Gday Stan (and "gmeddy" too)....

Ive dealt with these people (dont forget to remove the vil from evil ) before and found them to be very helpful and honest, plus, they usually have a lot of options to choose from and most purchases include spare elements, etc as well. 8-)

              Cheers guys,
              Mal.

I use to use the Glad Ziplock bags and heat sealing the top bit, but I found they dont actually seal 100% as I can still smell the roasted bean afterward. Then I switched to proper coffee bags with one way value and overnight the bag will expand like a balloon. I also suck the air out of it through the one way valve with a Hoover right after i seal the bag... I know its only a little air in there but may make a difference; at least in my mind.

Ive also tried Vacuum bins, they work for the first day but then because of the Degas hence the inside is loosing negative pressure, the lids opens up by itself. so unless you want to pump them every 24 hours or so. And they are kind of expensive at $40 a pop.

Im puzzled -- how come they expand? Isnt the valve supposed to let air out?

                      Re: not much gassing-off...

They do, but since the beans are still giving off gasses, the bag expands until the internal pressure is enough to force the air out - through the valve.

Its the best sign you have a great seal.

Oh. Well in that case I dont, since am suffering from a tragic and near-complete absence of floaty bags

Maybe I have temperamental beans ;D

Or maybe I need an impulse sealer....

Noooo -- not more coffee gear....

I was looking at an impulse sealer, did a bit of a google search and found that a hair straightener can seal bags. Works a treat with the bags I get from coffee parts, just make sure you only seal the very top portion! (5 -10mm)

My impulse sealer wasnt too expensive.
How much is a hair straightener?

The impulse sealer does a 2mm seal.
5-10mm wouldnt get too many reuses out of a bag.

Wasnt really looking at it from a price point, just thinking about what I had around the house that was hot and would seal the bag. My wife hasnt used hers for a couple of years since I convinced her that it burned her hair!

Im sure you could seal less than 5-10mm if you wanted to reuse bags, im sure its not as good as the real deal but if there is one in your house it will do the job. 8-)
