you can get a pretty decent one off Ebay for around $50
I can highly recommend these people (dont forget to remove the "vil" from evil ) as honest and expedient, just in case youre not sure who you can trust. They often include spares with their Sealers too so usually represents good value. The actual sealer is really heavy duty and for home use would probably last a lifetime. Ive got a 300mm unit that can use either a 3mm or 2mm Heating Element, so ideal for Coffee Bag sealing....

    Cheers,
    Mal.

My impulse sealer wasnt too expensive.

About how much is "not too expensive", TG?

Wasnt really looking at it from a price point, just thinking about what I had around the house that was hot and would seal the bag. My wife hasnt used hers for a couple of years since I convinced her that it burned her hair!

Im sure you could seal less than 5-10mm if you wanted to reuse bags, im sure its not as good as the real deal but if there is one in your house it will do the job. 8-)

How much is a hair straightener?

The impulse sealer does a 2mm seal.
5-10mm wouldnt get too many reuses out of a bag.

I was looking at an impulse sealer, did a bit of a google search and found that a hair straightener can seal bags. Works a treat with the bags I get from coffee parts, just make sure you only seal the very top portion! (5 -10mm)

Oh. Well in that case I dont, since am suffering from a tragic and near-complete absence of floaty bags

Maybe I have temperamental beans ;D

Or maybe I need an impulse sealer....

Noooo -- not more coffee gear....

They do, but since the beans are still giving off gasses, the bag expands until the internal pressure is enough to force the air out - through the valve.

Its the best sign you have a great seal.

I use to use the Glad Ziplock bags and heat sealing the top bit, but I found they dont actually seal 100% as I can still smell the roasted bean afterward. Then I switched to proper coffee bags with one way value and overnight the bag will expand like a balloon.
Im puzzled -- how come they expand? Isnt the valve supposed to let air out?

I also suck the air out of it through the one way valve with a Hoover right after i seal the bag... I know its only a little air in there but may make a difference; at least in my mind.

Ive also tried Vacuum bins, they work for the first day but then because of the Degas hence the inside is loosing negative pressure, the lids opens up by itself. so unless you want to pump them every 24 hours or so. And they are kind of expensive at $40 a pop.

I may buy one after the wife gets over the tamper purchase. 8-)

    Gday Stan (and "gmeddy" too)....

Ive dealt with these people (dont forget to remove the vil from evil ) before and found them to be very helpful and honest, plus, they usually have a lot of options to choose from and most purchases include spare elements, etc as well. 8-)

    Cheers guys,
    Mal.

Oh theyre great. And not too expensive really!
Unless of course you want the foot pedal model with the large 20mm sealing strip.

Have a look on the bay of e under impulse sealers to get an idea.
