Re: Gene roast times and temperatures for starter
This discussion board is fantastic.Great response.
Thanks for all your suggestions to get me started.
As requested by Mike the 4 green bean varieties supplied in the starter pack are:-
1.Zimbabwe Pezuru Estate AA
2.Ethiopian Gambella Naturals
3.Ugandan Bugisu AA
4.Brazil Santos
If I could be supplied with the individual roasting temps and times for these varieties my
first attempts to roast would be made a lot easier.
Thanks again

Hi
What beans do you have in your starter pack?
We may have some exact times for you.

Re: Gene roast times and temperatures for starter
I roast 300gm at a time:
Set the Gene at 230° and 20 minutes.
Roast until the first snaps of first crack (±8 minutes remaining) and then back the temperature down to 225° over the space of a minute or so.
The first sounds of second crack are usually at about 2-4 minutes remaining, and I mostly go another 20-30 seconds until I can hear the second crack starting to pick up before I hit the cool button.
Bag when warm/cool and try and wait at least 3 days to a week before cracking it open.

Re: Gene roast times and temperatures for starter
Hi Fred
Id suggest you start at 200 grams. That will give you enough to dial in the grinder and get the pour right and have enough for quite a few shots. While just experimenting youll go through your beans a bit quick with 300 gms.
Additionally I find that for some beans (I dont have my notes here at work) 300 gms is a bit much for the Gene and it can get too hot too quickly.
Set the Gene to 230 C or 228 C - 2C diff does not really matter. Thats a good trial temp to see how a bean tastes. I sometimes use 235 C.
FC will be at anything from 10 to 16 mins and SC from 4 to 7 minutes after FC. SC may be faint and hard to hear - it depends on the bean.
Press the end button right at SC and your roast will be fine.
Once you know when SC is you can try the same bean ending 30 secs (or 1min) before SC and another 30s (or 1 min) after SC and taste the difference between them.

Re: Gene roast times and temperatures for starter
Hi Fred,Originally posted by fred link=1219183126/0#0 date=1219183126I have just received the starter pack and intend to attempt my first roast with a Gene roaster.
Are there any suggestions on the roast times and temperatures?
Thanks
They do vary a bit and the bean that you use will also influence things. For example, Robusta will tend to require a hotter roast and I find that Monsooned malabar requires a gentler roast.
For an "average" bean, I measure 300g accurately and roast around 228 deg C. I tend to get 2nd crack at 19-21 min depending on bean.
Later on- as you learn more, you will no doubt start experimenting
Enjoy....
