  • Has this been tried before?

Until I can afford/locate a suitable BM Ive been tryin to think up ways to build a temporary roaster.
I dont have a heatgun yet..still tryin to find somewhere that sells decent ones

My latest idea is to set a heat gun up like in the pic and then make a support for a SS colander so that it sits directly above the heat gun allowing me to manually stir the beans.

Would the holes in the colander allow enough airflow through to roast the beans?

Im really just thinkin out aloud here and wonderin if anyone else has tried a similar method to this..

    Dont think so gronk
More heat will be lost than actualy doing its job
    Keep the colander for cooling

The BM enclosure is actually assisting the HG to have consistent heat distribution

TG can probably explain it better

Many people use a S/S bowl even a dog bowl is ok
and hand stir the coffee beans with a whisk
Does the same job and you get some exercise?

          No I cant.
          You explained it very well.

Gronk - I have an identical looking colander that is attached to the top of my cooling bucket.

My current HG seems to have a lower airflow than my previous ones but even so youd be heating the metal more than the beans. It would be more like a pan roast than a HG/bowl roast and the heat supply would probably be inadequate.

You can pick up a cheap SS bowl in most junk shops but I was lucky and got mine at K-Mart one day on special.

I had an old stock pot I hadnt thrown out which was just the right size to sit the bowl in.
          Why?
So that I had some insulation between me, and the SS bowl (plus handles).
Prior to that, the bowl got hot enough to start melting the milk crate it was sitting on.

Cheap SS bowl, wooden spoon, heatgun. Easy.

Re: Has this been tried before?

            Hi Gronk,

Safeway had some nice deep rubber bottomed Stainless bowlsfor $8 that work really well while you hunt down a BM the dog bowls were all $11-12. The rubber saves chasing the bowl around the table as well I am only about 6 roasts down so far but it is working well.

The strainer is what I started using for a cooler initially but it still took a while to get the temp down without any air going past the beans.

Re: Has this been tried before?

As others have replied before, the collander wouldnt suit roasting with the HG underneath. The holes are insufficient to let enough hot air in. In fact, I used to use pretty much the exact same collander for cooling with the fan underneath. It didnt do the job well even as a cooler. Ive since started using a different collander, a wire mesh type for colling and it does the job way better. Id imagine the same would apply to heating.
You can get really cheap used breadmakers which Id prefer way ahead of a s/s bowl. The most difficult part of this process is creating a handsfree HG holder. Once youve got that sorted out, the rest is easy. That is, until you desire to have a lot more control and know what temps and heat rise rates etc... The accessories keep increasing (temp probe, CS software etc). And its all great fun!

Ive considered the dog bowl arrangement but I dont like the idea of holding both the HG and stirring stick at the same time. Maybe Ill just make a stand for the HG similar to what others use for their BM correttos.

I have watched heaps of videos on youtoob and am amazed at the inventiveness of some people

The only thing slowing down the whole process of setting up my own roaster properly is Im currently saving every spare penny to upgrade my grinder to a Macap or Mazzer, otherwise Id already be roasting in a BM

If you are into brewing beer and have a bottle capper, this makes a great stand, all you need is a clamp to clamp to the capper handle and a counter weight (claw hammer) and it all works a treat.

Ive got a small "portable" drill press (similar to the pic) which will be perfect for the job....once I unbolt it from its moorings and make it "portable" again

                      Well Im under way!!

Picked up a brand new Ryobi variable temp heat gun last night at bunnings.

It has the usual 2 fan speeds, but also has a dial and LED indicators on the back that allows constantly variable heat settings between 50 - 650 degrees C

Just ordered a greanbean starter pack.

All I need now is a bowl and a colander

... and a fan matey, aimed at the beans & heat-gun while roasting - prevents too quick a rise in temp in the beans, keeps your heat-gun under less strain, & blows the chaff away.

Try and source a hands-free one, if you can ;D

I have never roasted via manual stirring before so i wish you well.
I am sure the results will be a real eye opener. ;D

Ill just fumble my way through it, no doubt stuffing the first batch or 2 at least.
