    Not entirely off topic.

I did a deliberate roast last week with Plunger in mind. PNG Wahgi to a lighter roast than espresso. Tastes fairly good in a Plunger (in my modest opinion ) but I tried it in an Espresso and it was average. Roasting tomorrow same bean into 2nd crack for espresso.
The PNG wahgi was my favourite by a long shot out of the brown bean sample pack I tried over the last few weeks.
Im hopin to get some as green beans in the future.

Currently waitin for my green bean sampler to arrive (monday hopefully) but dunno if it contains any wahgi yet. Fingers crossed

Tried a few of the CS Espresso brews in plunger and they were average but in a Vac Pot were great.

Lots more playing needed with all coffee toys, but the Plunger is now last on my list

If you roast it a bit light they go well in a plunger
Eeeww! Ive got a plunger that I havent used for several years...along with various other coffee makin contraptions.
They all live in the back of a cupboard in a dark and forgotten corner of a shed now  ;D
    Whats wrong with plungers?  ;D

Just because espresso is [sarcasm] "King" [/sarcasm] it doesnt mean you cant enjoy coffee in all its forms (plunger, drip, syphon, espresso etc.)

    edit: Off topic I know

It may have been alluded to before, but you can put the collander INSIDE a stainless steel bowl, then heat from the top, stirring.  The SS bowl will better hold the heat under the collander.  When youre done, pull out the collander and place it on your cooling fan.

if you get them to dark get the fire blanket
Im gunna build a bean cooler similar to the one Thundergod thunk up, which theoretically should suck the heat outa them before they go nuclear...I hope

I have never roasted via manual stirring before so i wish you well.

... All I need now is a bowl and a colander
... and a fan matey, aimed at the beans & heat-gun while roasting - prevents too quick a rise in temp in the beans, keeps your heat-gun under less strain, & blows the chaff away.

Try and source a hands-free one, if you can ;D
Ill "borrow" a fan from one of my daughters rooms till summer

    Well Im under way!!

Picked up a brand new Ryobi variable temp heat gun last night at bunnings.

It has the usual 2 fan speeds, but also has a dial and LED indicators on the back that allows constantly variable heat settings between 50 - 650 degrees C

Just ordered a greanbean starter pack.

All I need now is a bowl and a colander

If you are into brewing beer and have a bottle capper, this makes a great stand, all you need is a clamp to clamp to the capper handle and a counter weight (claw hammer) and it all works a treat.

    Mal
Ive got a small "portable" drill press (similar to the pic) which will be perfect for the job....once I unbolt it from its moorings and make it "portable" again

Many people use a S/S bowl even a dog bowl is ok
and hand stir the coffee beans with a whisk
Does the same job and you get some exercise?

You tube has a video on it if you do a search

Ive considered the dog bowl arrangement but I dont like the idea of holding both the HG and stirring stick at the same time. Maybe Ill just make a stand for the HG similar to what others use for their BM correttos.

I have watched heaps of videos on youtoob and am amazed at the inventiveness of some people

The only thing slowing down the whole process of setting up my own roaster properly is Im currently saving every spare penny to upgrade my grinder to a Macap or Mazzer, otherwise Id already be roasting in a BM

Re: Has this been tried before?

As others have replied before, the collander wouldnt suit roasting with the HG underneath. The holes are insufficient to let enough hot air in. In fact, I used to use pretty much the exact same collander for cooling with the fan underneath. It didnt do the job well even as a cooler. Ive since started using a different collander, a wire mesh type for colling and it does the job way better. Id imagine the same would apply to heating.
You can get really cheap used breadmakers which Id prefer way ahead of a s/s bowl. The most difficult part of this process is creating a handsfree HG holder. Once youve got that sorted out, the rest is easy. That is, until you desire to have a lot more control and know what temps and heat rise rates etc... The accessories keep increasing (temp probe, CS software etc). And its all great fun!
