    Hey All,
Noob here im learning to make coffees at this place i work and i dont know if im getting my frothing right. I had this coffee at Michelles pat. in Arndale (adelaide) and the coffee was simply wonderful, thick and creamy till the last sip. I Have no idea how the barista managed to get the air mixed so well. Any tips on that? Thanks.

Depends how flat you like your flat white, what you are really looking for is the mouthfeel that tastes nice to you. Some prefer no froth and others like half a cup of the stuff you are really looking for that creamy texture in the milk to add to the flavour of the coffee.

    Welcome to the journey!!

    Cheers Moto,

My Roma - which was purchased this week doesnt have a plastic frothing aid on the tip, its just a metal tube with a single hole in the tip...

Must have had the wand too high in the milk for too long then hey?

Ill keep the 10 - 40 % increase in mind, 10 really isnt much is it!

Does the roma have a frothing aid on the steam tip? (A bit of plastic or rubber that slides off) If so take it off and start again. You should be aiming for a 10-40% ish increase in volume depending on what sort of drink you are making (less for a flat white and more for a cap) so a tripling in volume is too much. When you have great milk you will see no bubbles, the milk will look and handle (when you swish the milk around the jug) like white paint, and when you put your ear up to the milk jug you will hear very few bubbles "popping".

    Hope that helps.

Re: Newbie... is there a guide?

Having just steamed/stretched some milk I now have a question. My milk roughly trippled in volume in the jug from 1/3rd the jug to almost full and only had a small amount of "dishwater type bubbles" on the top - I assume the only way the milk is expanding is by the addition of air and as I dont see the bubbles that makes them "micro"...

Is this indicative of a good result? or is it not quite that simple...?

Just want to be able to make the best coffee I can

    Cheers

I.e what exactly is "stretching" the milk?
Same as steaming the milk by a different name

What I would really like is a guide to how the milk should look/feel after steaming/texturing - maybe some pictures in a glass cup/jug?
Wet Paint is the consistency you are striving to achieve

Also how do you begin with latte art? do you pour the milk in gently down the side of the cup to not disturb the crema too much and then when your doing the final bit of froth for the top attempt the art or...?
Start with a little figure 8 to break up the crema and for the next bit Practice, practice, practice

Also see some videos as a visual reference

started a topic Newbie... is there a guide?

    Newbie... is there a guide?

I think its stoopid question time but Im new to doing home coffees my wife and I both enjoy milk drinks - her cappacino and myself late style...

Ive been browsing and searching posts here and find myself not knowing enough to even understand some of the terminology - I.e what exactly is "stretching" the milk?

What I would really like is a guide to how the milk should look/feel after steaming/texturing - maybe some pictures in a glass cup/jug?
