    Haha..

Its funny that when I first started reading this website I was just trying to figure out why my DeLonghi was getting portafilter sneeze (and almost removing my hand). I remember going "roasting your own beans, these people are crazy!" ... Yesterday I ordered a starter pack from Andy and have been windowshopping poppers the last couple of days. Ive also probably spent almost 1000 bucks on machine, grinder and accessories already.. heh..

Thanks for the pointers for people who might have some tips on grinder cleaning; Ill check out the manual and if Im still stuck will probably hit them up.

*fingers crossed that his new steam wand part revision B arrives this evening*

    Hey mate,

Show me someone who doesnt get even a little bit passionate about their coffee and equipment, and Ill show you someone who has no interest in being a genuine "dyed in the wool" CoffeeSnob ;D.

All that aside, my Mokita is the stand-alone version with the grinding duties being admirably catered for by a Rocky. Like you said, I cant imagine that it is that big a chore to clean the grinder out every now and again..... I know Greg Pullman of "Pullman Tampers" has a machine like yours so maybe a PM to Greg will put you on the right track. For that matter, I think one of our sponsors also sells and services these machines..... http://www.cosmorexcoffee.com.au/ and Im sure FreshCoffee (Atillio) will be only too happy to help you out if he can.

    Cheerio,
    Mal.

    Well Mal,

My mate came and picked up the part tonight and should be making the required modifications very soon; hopefully it will be finished soon and I can post photos and bask in the glory of a customisation of my very own.. hehe..

There is something satisfying about having looked at something and said "this could really be better", setting out to change it and coming up with a finished product that is, in fact, *better*!

The machine is no longer just *a* Nemox Dell Opera, it is now *my* Nemox Dell Opera and one of a kind.

... meanwhile I continue my quest for acceptable espresso.....

Remind me -- do you have the model with the built in grinder? I have yet to check out the manual yet but Im wondering the easiest way to get in there and clean it.

Im sure it has to be servicable in that way somehow -- I cant imagine the folks at Nemox expect a machine of that price bracket just to keep letting rancid oils build up on the burrs.

.. but I digress -- as I tend to do lately

    Keep ya posted!

    cheers
    Lachlan

    Gday mate,

Yeah, I noticed that a few times with Alans roasts on odd occasions too (before I wised up and started roasting my own ;D). To my eye and the general character of the beans, it seemed to me that some of the roasts were over-done, for my tastes anyway. One batch of Ismaili I received from Alan about two and a half years ago, was so overdone and oily that you could scoop out some beans from the bag they came in and then theyd stick together like a glutinous mass that had to be knocked out of the scoop into the grinder .

Anyway, cant wait to see how your final version of the wand mod turns out. Catch you soon,

    Cheers,
    Mal.

    Heya Mal,

My mate should be coming to pick up the part this evening and hopefully will get the last couple of bits of fine tuning done tomorrow or the next day.

Hes trying to fast track it because he knows that Im going without my milk at the moment and my drink of choice is the latté -- funnily enough, being without the milk encouraged me to pull a few espresso shots -- I got desperate and thought it might be a good opportunity to get myself onto the short blacks

I had just got some fresh beans from coffeeco.com.au and thought the espresso tasted "funny" -- it was a different bean completely to what I usually get so I wasnt sure if it was that or if the roast was still a little too fresh.

Ill definitely have a round of coffees when the part comes in later this week which should have been ample "resting time", so Ill see what its like then.

Will let you know how things go!

    cheers
    Lachlan

    No worries Lachlan,

A few teething troubles are to be expected no doubt :P, but it will be interesting to see how the final result looks, and more importantly, how it works 8-). Waiting with bated breath for the next instalment,

    Cheers mate,
    Mal.

    OK

So we are at revision A of my modified wand tip and so far its not too shabby, it just needs some fine tuning. I need to add a washer into the equation and block up a hole in it.

Mal, being that this turned out to be a little more complex/tricky thane expected and involve attachment to the existing tip I cant offer you a nice little drop-in copy for your own machine

Once I have it finished and functioning Ill post some photos and information on what we did.

    cheers

    Gday again Lachlan,
Yep, CoffeeParts provide really excellent service. Ive only been dealing with them for the past couple of years for small purchases at odd intervals but they always provide me with absolutely first class service and very quick turn-around on delivery .

Regarding a cost ceiling for the complete kit :-?...... how does $30.00 sound? I suppose when it was all said and done, the mod using the Silvia Wand cut and spliced to the Mokita Wand was going to cost me about that much with all the odds and sods thrown in so that would be a fair price from that perspective .

The things we get up to here on CS, eh? Just to squeeze that little extra level of performance and quality (hopefully) from our machines.... definitely worth it though 8-). Hear from you soon,
My parts arrived this morning *gobsmacked*.. I have NEVER had such good service from a website ANYWHERE. I ordered yesterday afternoon and it arrived this morning. Thats under 24hours -- simply unheard of!! I will *definitely* order from them again.

I now have a knockbox Grindenstein (black) so no more running to the bin and dripping all over the floor. I also have a nice new "professional" 600ml milk jug, which has the nice little "nib" for latte art and almost a slightly cone shape to it, which seems to aid the whirlpooling.

Now all I need is the new attachment to get the tip onto it

yes -- the things people will do to fulfil their passions/hobbies -- Being a latté drinker microfoam means a lot to me.. and I also have a bit of an itch to try my hand at some latté art to impress my friends

Ill let you know how I go with the part...

    cheers

    Hi Brett,

Ah crud -- You are probably correct with regards to commercial vs home tip.

.... in fact -- you were correct. I just called Coffeeparts -- the part I ordered was *four hole*. The reason they are cheaper is because they are more mass produced. ie. commercial 10mm wand parts.

The tip being fit for 10mm is not the issue for me, since Im having the extender/adapter made custom, but it having 4 holes was -- Too much steam for small amounts of milk on a home machine -- that and id probably lose steam pressure

Thankfully the helpful folk at CP changed it over and let me know that I should have all my goodies tomorrow.

    Now *thats* service!!

He also gave me a few helpful tips for machining the part!

Apparently great service still does exist!

    Lachlan,

If you havent already, it might pay to confirm with coffeeparts that these parts do fit a silvia.
I dont think the wand - part 700336 - is for a Silvia.
I was trying to buy one a little while ago and coffeeparts advised me they did not have any. I think this one is for the commercial Rancilios.

Apologies if you have already verified it will fit.

    Brett.

    Heya Mal,

My partner in steamwand crime .. LOL..

I have ordered from CoffeeParts the steam tip and gasket parts from the Silvia section.

    http://coffeeparts.com.au/ran/ran2.html

    Part nos: 600790 and 614723

My theory is that since the Silvia and Nemox have the same capacity brass boiler that these would mate well together. Also, funnily enough the Silvia Tip and Gasket together will cost you $8, whereas the "steam tip" accessory is around $14 on its own.

Im hoping they arrive within a few days -- I have never ordered from CoffeParts before so not sure what their turn around on delivery is like.

I go away for around a month on Monday, so I am hopeful my order will arrive before then so that I can give my friend the whole machine with the desired tip and gasket and ask him to make an extension/adaption part for it.

Ill ask him to make two, if youd like? Just give me a ceiling on expenditure, as I have no idea what it will cost and it just saves you or I from any unexpected surprises.

    cheers

Re: Best steam wand tip for Nemox/Imat Pressure?

    Hi again Lachlan,

Sounds really good, cant wait til a kit is available. Im not really a very experienced texturer of milk though, just one or two a day for my son and maybe a couple extra here and there when friends turn up. Ive got a tip with a very small hole fitted at the moment and this works fine for single lattes in a small jug but does drag out a bit when Ive got larger quantities to do in a larger jug.

Ive had a look at that 2-Hole Tip on the CoffeeParts site and Id say that that would have to come pretty close to the ideal for general all-round use, I think the 4-Hole Tip might be a bit much for the Mokita 300ml Boiler though, and maybe for smallish quantities of milk too .

Regarding the easy removal of the Mokita/Nemox Steam Wand..... Its not too hard to do. It really just comes down to a matter of whether you can get hold of the right sort of spanner to fit into that tight space where the Steam Valve is attached to the Boiler. The actual Nut that secures the Wand is Split to facilitate removal without having to disassemble the entire machine, but is Loctited" to prevent unwanted loosening..... comes off relatively easy though.

Once the Nut is removed from the Valve Body, you just orientate it (the Nut) so that the split lines up with the Steam Wand, then slide off. The Wand can now be withdrawn from the Valve Body and though the hole in the panel. To replace it is just the reverse of the above and the acquisition and application of some suitable Loctite when tightening the Nut back up.

Regarding the spanner to do the job, I just "sacrificed" an old open-end spanner by bending the appropriate end at right angles to the shaft right near where the Jaw attaches to the shaft. Not a lot of force is required to overcome the Loctite as a non-permanent type of Loctite is used. If you need to apply more force than you can with your bare hands, all you need to do then is to attach a shifting spanner to the shaft of the modified spanner and turn away . Works quite well from my singular experience anyway 8-).

Hope that helps to shed a bit of light on things Lachlan, and not make matters worse :-?. Maybe one of our more experienced or professional colleagues can help us out with a suggestion of the most appropriate Wand Tip size and arrangement. Awaiting the outcome with bated breath ;D,

    Cheers,
    Mal.

    Hi Lachlan,

Id certainly buy in to any kit (provided that it was professionally made ) that would allow me to extend the wand on my Mokita..... I was going to extend it with a Silvia wand but havent started yet and your idea sounds better.

From memory, I think the standard is a ?" BSP thread but I notice that a lot of the commercial rigs are bigger than this, more like 10mm. Regarding the extension, heres one in this exploded view from CoffeeParts for Faema machines...... http://www.coffeeparts.com/fae/fae12.html . I suppose if your mate could come up with something like this in s/s it would be a cinch to fit.
My idea is to make a part similar to Part 528878 in that link (The steam wand extender).

The Nemox/Imat wand would screw into the extender at the top and the part would extend the wand to a more reasonable length and provide a suitable thread (male or female) to attach a nice steam wand tip to.

The idea here is a completely non-invasive mod that takes the stock wand and turns it into a traditional café style tip (not a bastardised "froth assisting" tip).

I guess you would say that the part would be "professionally made" since my friend works as a part maker in the metals industry and between him and his work mate he can probably "make any part I need" (according to him).

Now if I can find a way for him to make the parts without giving him my machine or the wand, that will be my next trick!

After using a proper wand when I was using that commercial machine, it just saddens me to see my ever improving shots from my home machine dumped on with lacklustre milk.

This still begs the question of what tip I should try to fit it with?

Maybe its time to browse coffeeparts, you know that have over 3500 spare parts and accessories!! (Sorry.. couldnt help plugging a site sponsor.. their little animated banner cries out to me :P )

I know there are some with 4 holes, some with 2 holes.. maybe some with 1??

    cheers
    Lachlan
