  • Frothing 70ml of milk

Hi folks, in recent days I was asked to froth a small amount of milk. The steamer on my Giotto produces so much steam that it takes but the blink of an eye to heat. Any suggestion of how to achieve well frothed small quantities? i am talking about 70ml. My smallest beaker is 300ml. Milk is cold.

    Or, is it not possible?
    thanks...

I froth about 200ml on my Giotto in a small jug. I only use a small amount of that at a time, (for macchiato or small Cap), then re-chill, top up, and re-froth as needed later.(And I can hear sharp intakes of breath from professional baristas as I speak). But its only for me, and seems to work fine.

Not sure frothing 70ml at a time will work on my Giotto though.

      Re: Frothing 70ml of milk

I have successfully stretched a small quantity of milk in a 300ml jug using my Giotto. I just filled to halfway to the bottom of the spout. It was done in about 5 seconds using normal milk steaming method.

This will mean you end up with more than 70ml but either accept a small amount of wastage or (even better) make two piccolo lattes

You have to be careful of initial placement of the wand. The hardest thing I found was avoiding overstretching rather than overheating the milk. You can practice steaming small quantities with the water + drop of dish detergent method for milk steaming practice. See elsewhere on the Milk Froth and Bubbles board if you dont know what this is about

Ideally youd need a 150ml pitcher.
This would keep the depth/width ratio the same.

If you think its hard now in a 300ml pitcher, imagine trying it in a 600ml or 1litre one.
        Crazy right?
So if you wouldnt put 70ml in a larger pitcher, then it makes sense to put it into a smaller one.

Ive managed to steam milk in a 30ml pitcher so anythings possible.

I do roughly that much in a 300 ml jug all the time--although I have put a bit of wire through the steam holes to decrease the volume of steam. This stretches the steam time out to almost 8 seconds!

This has been VERY helpful. Thank you all. have not tried the wire trick but getting there and looking for an even smaller jug...even tried a small porcelain milk jug which is not bad and has a good spout but sensitive to knocking I think. Thanks again folks, it is nice to know that I am not alone...trying!
