  • Can I have a weak cafe latte?

Sometimes it is wise to not correct/educate friends and better to just shut up. Such as when they ask for low fat latte.  Because how do you explain that it is silly to ask for 98% fat free milk if 96.7% fat free is all I have?  And that with the coffee shot added the difference is between 2.4g and 4g of fat, or 98.7 and 97.8% fat free of the finished product. But that aside, what to do when they ask for a weak one.  And then cant explain what this really means.

The obvious problems relate to part filled group handles, spooning/tipping out some of the shot or even reducing the extraction time.

The best answer I had to date was to just make a standard everything and say: was this ok?

    Any suggestions?

This comes down to peoples expectations and past experiences.

I get a lot of people asking for a double shot large coffee. Fact is, I use a double shot all the time. So are they really asking for an extra strong coffee because they like it that way or are they asking for a normal strength coffee because in the past theyve been to establishments that serve a large with a single shot and it tasted crap?

The best way to figure it out is to ask them the question back, in different wording. For instance, I repeat back, "so youd like a large, strong coffee" rather than "a large double shot". If their response is, "no normal strength, but with a double shot", then I know theyre request is because theyve been given overly weak coffees in the past. If they were to respond yes, then you know theyre preference is actually for a strong coffee.

The other funny one I had once was someone asking for a flat white, extra froth and some chocolate on top. Basically they wanted a cappuccino, but why bother correcting them and making them feel stupid?

Just stop the shot sooner than usual. Dont modify your method when pulling a shot. Youll end up with a bad tasting coffee, not a weak coffee.

When trying somewhere new Ill ask the barista what size cups and how many shots they use.
My order depends on their answers.
Then neither of us should be surprised.

Re: Can I have a weak cafe latte?

At home double shot in 200-220ml is what I drink and its what I serve up to others (no option generally given ). Oh and I dont have low fat milk or Soy at home either.

The Menu for when I am making coffee for $$ is quite clear that a 12 oz is made standard with a double and 1 1/2 in the 8s and to ask if you would like anything different. I still get plenty of customers who ask for a single in the 8s and some that want doubles and even a few real wierdo coffee haters that want singles in 12s  :P

Its an inside out Latte trying to disappear up its own steamed milk trail.

Port Fairy, You can try and top it and I reserve the right to be rude back in return, or be put under pressure when I point you toward the lever to make your own ;D

Remember too, that in fat free or low fat milk coffee will taste stronger as it doesnt have the sweetness of the milk fat.

Weak shot to me is a ristretto from a 14g double basket.

Normal shot is a normal shot from a 14g double basket.

Strong shot would be a ristretto from a 21g triple basket.

Well that is how we make it at our place... not sure if that is right or not.

                    At my workplace:

                    normale = 21g (naked)
weak = 21g split (two spout porta filter)

A weak drink would be a single shot (split double) in a 12 ounce latte glass
