Re: Soy Life - No Fat Fresh Soy Milk
I hope this isnt a too late a post for thomas_cho and others to read however I have a good alternative to soy milk for anyone who is lactose intolerant.
I am lactose intolerant and if I ever get a coffee or hot chocolate out I put up with the soy milk taste, however at home it is a different story.
For years I have been drinking Lidells Lactose free milk. http://www.liddells.com.au/lactose_what_is.htm
This is cows milk however has had Lactase added to take out the Lactose. This results in a lactose free cows milk that tastes like cows milk. The only thing is that it does taste a little sweeter than cows milk however i doubt this will affect the end result of the coffee. I personally think it tastes better than cows milk. My friend has started drinking it and she is not lactose intolerant, she just likes the taste.
It is available in most supermarkets in with the soy milk isle and it comes in full fat, reduced fat and skim varieties.
Dont ask me about frothability of it though as I have only just purchased my first coffee machine and am still learning the technique of frothing!

Re: Soy Life - No Fat Fresh Soy Milk
Hi all,
I am lactose intolerant, and have tried Soy milk with coffee. Suffice to say I have chosen to bear with the stomach upset rather than put up with Soy milk coffee.
Good thing is that my stomach seems to be okay with one glass a day. Anymore than that ... and the stomach lodges a strong complaint.
I have also tried rice milk, and it is sweet, but the one I tried had a rather thin consistency, I doubt that it would go well with coffee.

Id imagine a rice based milk would be rather sweet.
Next we can discuss wheat milk. :P

No doubt Rich, it seems over there theyre more interested in stoking their egos than the portafilter. I quickly lost interest in that forum due to all the animosity and plonking going on. Unfortunately this seems to be the case through-out the news groups. :-/
On the soy front I enjoy many products made from soy beans including several meat substitutes, milk however is not among them! Every soy milk product Ive ever tried tasted like I was drinking a glass of chalk. Pack it with spices, chill it, steam it, it doesnt matter. It still tastes like chalk to me. :P
Another milk substitute that I personally detest but is very popular over here is Rice Milk with Rice Dream being the most commonly seen label. If youre looking for a substitute for milk and dont like soy you might try that.

Re: Soy Life - No Fat Fresh Soy Milk
At the union cafes at uni they use soygold brand,
I have a vegan friend and every know and then she will accidentaly by me a coffee made with that instead of milk.
It is the nicest of the soy milks i have tasted in coffee and she agrees. She beleives that brand has lots of Fat in it. still doesnt compare to parmalat 99% though, but either does skim...

Yes, the "I dont want to know" covers my espresso, no fat soy and for the people that have owned a cow... anything that comes in a carton!

Re: Soy Life - No Fat Fresh Soy Milk
Well Im all for people drinking what they like, but lets not confuse milk based coffee drinks with a beverage made from two different types of bean.
alt.coffee folk are a little too precious for my taste with reputations based mostly on their own opinions of themselves.
Can I suggest adding an additional options to some of these polls called "dont want to know". :-X

Still never figured out what being plonked is. I thought it was getting blotto down the pub
There is a Café in NZ that has a sign up along the lines of "If you want soy dont ask we dont serve it"

As near as I can figure it Rich, being plonked is the equivilent of being labeled an idiot and put on ignore, and that cafe sounds like its my kind of place. ;D

Re: Soy Life - No Fat Fresh Soy Milk
I like good soy milk, nutty, earthy and creamy but I only like it as a stand-alone "cold drink" and would not want it in my coffee!
Some poeple do like it in their coffee, so Ive given it some air here.
The low fat "Soy Life" soy milk did taste lousy (IMHO), the Vitasoy Soy Milk tastes great (great for soy) but didnt steam well.
Im sure that one day a bold Soy fan will post a "this is great" message in here ;D

Last time i did the soy crap looked curdled and tasted awful. :-X :-X
If soy is "Oh so natural" why the long list of ingrediance on the back? When milk has well just milk
IMHO soy milk is just wrong.
