I bought the extension off Greg and its great so much more freedom to get the right angle through the milk jug. Fitted up to a almost new Lelit PL041 ;D

Im interested, but after 6 months of using my machine Ive managed microfoam with the current tip, and I just spent my surplus money on a Pullman tamper

Well its three years since I made the extension above and I cant say Ive been flooded with enquiries, and despite spending much time getting a number of quotes making things like this just isnt viable commercially. I kinda hoped that by releasing the specs to the world it would encourage someone with a bit more time to take this on! But looks like there were no takers.

After much consideration, assisted by the ability to easily source 2010 Silvia tips (unlike the early ones) and the trickle of enquiries imploring me to produce these, Ive redesigned this extension to fit the 2010 tip. The Nemox / Quaha / Imat have the same size boiler as the Silvia (300ml) so its a good donor. Ill still have to make these extensions one by one (at least for now) - but it means they ARE available! Cost is $70 plus shipping.

So those who have been waiting in the wings and suffering with their existing one, hopefully there is now an alternative. I no longer have access to one of these machines so I cant test the one Ive made. I also hope the specs of the wand on the current units havent changed!

Ill contact those who have contacted me already about this and this first unit will go out to one of those.

If youre interested please email me greg_at_coffeetamperDOTcomDOTau.

Never mind about my earlier post in your other thread about this steam tip mod, Lachlan. I have found it. The pictures dont work though? PS. Im interested in doing a similar mod in the future. Ive PMd Greg in response to his post above.

Apologies for the very late discovery of this thread.

Since posting the above, a few people have contacted me asking if something like this can be made for their Nemox machine. It was only intended to be a one-off which is why I posted all the details about how to make it rather than keeping it commercial in confidence, but if youre interested in this and dont want to make it on your own lathe that you just happen to have out the back please email me; if I have an idea of how many I need to make itll be easier to work out whats going to be the best and cheapest way of doing it.

Re: Nemox Dell Opera / Fenice Steam Wand Mod!

    Hi all,

Just revisiting this one as I was recently placed in exactly the same situation as Lachlan.

Maybe Nemox steam wands differ, but the thread on mine was a regular non-tapered thread. As Lachlan pointed out, removing the steam tip leaves you with not much wand, so a new tip alone wasnt an option. To fit a proper steam tip (and in this case I opted for a Silvia tip) it was just a matter of making an adapter to go between the two, which having a lathe and a bit of excess stainless steel was easy enough to do. The other good thing about the Nemox is that having a ball jointed steam wand I could make the wand long enough to get right down into a 600ml jug and still have enough swing to remove it without tipping the jug.

The hardest bit was getting it to all look neat, as while stainless and chrome go OK the extension had to be larger in diameter than the original wand in order for it to screw on the original thread (which I wanted to retain in case for some unearthly reason the original tip was required!). For this I used a 35 degree chamfer to blend from the original wand to the extension, which was about the best I could do other than cutting the old thread off and tapping one on the inside and then using a butt joint. At the steam tip end theres just an internal chamfer to roughly match that of the Silvia tip so it recesses inside the wand neatly.

For others who may want to do the same thing, the thread on the Nemox wand is a fine M6 (M6x0.75) and the thread on the Silvia steam tip is a fine M5 (M5x0.8), and the extension piece is about 40mm long.

It will be interesting to see if the Nemox ones go up too.. hmm...
    They may well do Lachlan,

Its hard to say though, given how these machines get re-badged from each of the err, manufacturers :-?,

    Hi guys,

Not for long Im afraid to say..... the next batch of Imat Mokita/Napoletana machines to come into the country will be more expensive, how much.... I dont know but according to Lygon Imports (the importers) this is definite ,

Re: Nemox Dell Opera / Fenice Steam Wand Mod!

Just remember that the Nemox comes with an all-in-one frother/tip that once you remove you just have a very short open steam pipe, which will produce no foam and just spray milk across your kitchen.

If you want to do what Mal is doing then you want the Imat Napoletana/Mokita.

The steam tip is a little short but you can get decent foam from it for sure. The steam tip/end is one of the subtle differences between the Nemox and Imat branded versions of the machines that are otherwise almost identical.

Funnily enough the Nemox seems to fetch a slightly higher price point than the Imat

So if youre going to go with this group of machines I do think you should go Imat.

PS. I also back Mal up as far as coffee production goes from these machines!

    cheers
    Lachlan

Thanks for the advice, have you found the need to modify the steam wand or are you using the original?

Lachlan, it looks like a great piece of engineering but is the Nexox Fenice capable of producing reasonable milk without the mod. I was thinking of buying one but cant see the point if it has to be modified to produce decent milk. I may as well expand the budget and get a Sylvia. What do you reckon?
    Hi Semaj,

Just my personal $0.02 worth .... The Imat/Fenice/Quaha machines are capable of producing a coffee that is nigh on indiscernible in quality from a Silvia or similar machine, once youve got your technique down pat. It does this at a cost that is two-thirds the cost of a Silvia for a machine that has internals that are almost identical .

My rationale for going with the Mokita was that it is a great little machine to start out with, can produce great micro-foam so long as you match the jug size to the actual milk quantities needed, and I can put the money saved by not purchasing a Silvia towards a HX machine some time in the future. In the end, thats what I have actually achieved but via a slightly alternative method .

Dont under-estimate the Imat/Fenice/Quaha machines, they do a terrific job and at a great price entry point [smiley=thumbsup.gif],

    Cheers,
    Mal.

Re: Nemox Dell Opera / Fenice Steam Wand Mod!

Personally, it was a bit of a stretch for me to go the Nemox Dell Opera cash wise so to stretch again to a Silvia and then be without a grinder wasnt feasible.

I was told early on that a crap grinder with a good machine will still get you crap coffee (to simplify :P )

I actually was unaware of the importance of the style of wand the Dell Opera had -- in fact -- I think the Imat Mokita/Napoletana and Nemix Fenice/Dell Opera have different wands even though almost everything else about them is near identical.

The Dell Opera has a stock wand that is *workable* for sure, however, if you truly want great milk texturing, which the chances are you do (this *is* coffeeSNOBS :P ), you will struggle to get it without some kind of modding.

If you can swing it (and you have the bench space in your kitchen), go for a Silvia and a Rocky Doserless -- They are a tried and true combination, but will probably push your kit closer to or just over 1000 bucks, depending on where you shop.

Hope this helps you make your decision.

    cheers
    Lachlan

Semaj, my napoletana produces excelent steam especially with the new wand Ive made. You only have to swap it with the original. It uses the same nozzle nut etc and makes a great improvement on an already good machine. For more information look at http://tominoz.50webs.com/Pages/coffewand.htm.

Thanks Lachlan for sticking with Nemox Dell Opera, Im looking forward to your future mods. Now that Ive got the steam wand worked out, and the temp mesurment, my next problem is to get the grinder to drop into the centre of the portafilter while being easier to clean. Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Thomas
