    Re: Steam Wand Tips

I also have a NS Oscar and had the same frustrations with the original 4 hole tip and was also frustrated with the Coffee parts 2 hole tip slow speed. I went back to the original tip and jammed some food grade silversolder rod into 2 of the holes and have a perfect compromise I generally steam around 200-250ml of milk and although it can be difficult to find the sweet spot it works great when you do.

Whats a food grade silversolder rod and where do you get it from?
I take it you are talking about using a soldering iron that can be used when it might get in contact with food.

        Gday Monti,

Try the BOC Gases website and take a gander under welding supplies, heaps to choose from re size and Silver content. For "food-safe" applications, just need to make sure you select a Cadmium Free alloy..... Cadmium is really dangerous stuff. Id recommend this one from their online catalogue "PROSILVER 34T 1.5MM X 750MM 20EA = 1PK" - MSDS here..... Only $6.80+GST which includes postage. Sort of like a sample pack, comes in a plastic tube.....

        Cheers,
        Mal.

Hi, I have a VBM Domobar Super with 2 holes. I used to get awesome microfoam on my old breville cafe roma **cough**crap*cough*machine* cough**, and even with a silvia... But I really struggle with the VBM. Any tips? I did get some great microfoam yesterday, but its a rarity. I find its a lot harder to get it spinning with a hole pointing in the opposite direction :-P

                Re: Steam Wand Tips

I find the holes in the VBM 2-hole tip to be too large when Im stretching my 70 mls of milk.

I wound a bit of copper wire through the holes to reduce their size. I also place the tip close to the side of the jug so the spinning is in a vertical plane.

                Good luck.

                Greg

I used to block one of the holes with the tip of a toothpick (the round type) for a while till I got used to it. That worked fine, and obviously very reversible when you want to try with two holes again.

                  Cheers

                    Hey guys,

Just upgraded to a Bezzera BZ07P (thanks to Talk Coffee!), and I really need help! The 4 hole steam wand heats the milk up in no time like you guys said, but Ive gone to that form a 1-hole Silvia, hence now I am really good at getting super-duper bubbly milk! > Where would the sweet spot for this be and how should I position the wnd when texturing?

Hi Gavin,  I was also having this problem with my Silvia with a 3 hole tip.  Finally found the best way for me was to have the jug at about 40-45 degree angle  with the tip just below the surface of the milk towards the left side of the jug.  Make sure that your hearing the hissing sound but not the bubbling sound.  Having bubbling sound means that your wand is too far out of the milk and you will produce large bubbles like soap suds.

Hope this helps,  have fun practicing.
                      Daniel

Thanks Daniel, the 45 degree angle made all the difference! Im actually getting good milk these days :-) Although, I still think that a smaller hole tip would make it heaps better :-)

Just to update re steaming with the NS Oscar.
I blocked off the two rear holes on the steam wand and found that if I have the steam wand pretty much straight up and down, I can get a really easy to control whirlpool with great micro foam. If I angle the wand slightly away from the machine it all goes bad. At last I finally worked it out.

I find it intresting about the tooth pick Idea blocking the holes.
For refrence we use sharpened wooden plugs in leaking pipes at work to do the same thing. Gota use softwood though so the water expands the plug. They can stay there for years.

Thats awesome! Maybe I should try it. Although, Ive been getting pretty good milk on my unmodified tip lately. Holding the jug at 45 degrees makes a big improvement!
