Re: The importance of a good jug

Finally got around to ordering a new jug after many months since starting this thread. My art since that time has been ok but normally too fat and ugly and not enough fine detail.

First pour with the new one... OK Ive done better but its 100% or more on what Ive been able to do for months with my old one. Of particular interest in this photo is the detail in the leaves as I havent been able to do this for a while, not the symmetry which wasnt done well. Its the same type of jug I used at Epic so its not surprising results are improved again. I just felt so much more in control - the tip is a lot sharper so you can get right down to the surface, you can pour slowly when the jugs still half full without having it run down the front of the jug and onto the table (to avoid this I normally have to start pouring fairly fast which creates turbulence which messes up anything that might follow), and working with such a fine pencil I felt a lot more in control and could take my time on the art rather than having to rush it out to prevent any foam just glugging out and drowning it all.

Highly recommended. I might even start selling these jugs myself.

Good design for "cafe land"...i.e. it helps a lot with getting the whirlpool action happening without too much effort. The spout could be a bit better for latte art...but the major problem I have with it is that it is too bottom heavy to pour art.

They come in 1 size only, 1L in 3 colours; each to match the pura milk colours.

    Agreed re the consistency.
My experience this weekend in Terrigal where my morning coffee was well made and my afternoon one made by someone else was nowhere near as good, was disappointing.

Hey Julian - can I make a suggestion and sorry its OT....

I think it would be good for you to do the course with another perosn from your establishment. When you leave the training, you can learn from each other and spur each other on to greater heights in coffee making. It would also provide you with a back up in case you arent there and if that were to happen, consistency for your customers.

    Your call Julian,

Its best when the management team are aligned and this will come only out of a common experience and understanding IMHO....

Suggest you book soon though as the Saturday classes are generally full- and being the last one for until Feb, I anticipate a full house...

    regards

    Chris

    Hi Chris!

Hoping all is well with you!

Im waiting on Ash to confirm if his going to do it too.

At this stage im wanting to do the ABC on the 1/12/07 and Adv Espresso on the 8/12/07.

As I will be the primary barista in our operation, do you think its necessary for Ash to do the course too?

Or would I be able to guide him?

    Thanks Dennis!

Im pretty much a hack myself although hopefully that will change soon thanks to the good folk at the Coffee Acadamy!

As I will be the primary barista within my business venture, the notion of using those run of the mill stainless jugs does not excite me.
    Hey Julian,

Are you doing your training at the Coffee Academy on a Saturday (with me) ?

    Chris

Good luck with it Julian - they certainly look like nice jugs and as a bit of a hack, I can vouch for the fact that jugs make a difference - I now use MMs and they have morphed the lumpy spud into at least a fern.

Thank you for all your responses!

Dennis...I did call all the suppliers yesterday within the Espro website and none had any idea if they would or when they would be getting them.

Luca I appreciate your response and will venture to First Pour to have a sticky beak!

    Hi All,

Youre all welcome to come and have a play around with the toroid prototypes at First Pour. We are intending to stock them, but there has been a lot of demand for these and we havent been at the top of the list. More details when we have them.

How much of difference does it make using a toroid shaped jug? Also guessing it wont be cheap?
CK, I love it how you always ask the important questions!

Price-wise, looks like they arent going to be cheap. Some folk overseas are selling their own branded versions at about $55AUD. I have no idea whether or not this is indicative of what the RRP will be when we get them, or if it is simply because they have done a limited-edition run.

In terms of performance, the idea is that the sloping sides force the milk to roll on itself. The down side of this is that they are harder to use than a standard jug if you fill them to a point where the sides are still broadening out. So I wouldnt recommend trying to steam for a single drink in the 20oz Espro - that jug looks best for two. I, personally, am very much looking forward to trying out the 12oz Espro jug; I am hoping that it will be perfect for a single drink and that the sloped edges will make microfoaming easier on domestic machines.

The jug seems to perform as advertised - the sloping edges do pretty much force the milk to fold over itself. However, I found it much easier to froth as normal with the help of the sloping sides, rather than trying to learn Espros "just stick the tip in the centre" method. Judging the right level of foam requires you to get used to the shape of the jug, and you have to move your arm more than with a regular jug to finish off your rosetta.

CK, from all your photos you seem to have the whole milk thing down pat - I dont know that any expensive jug is going to do much for you!

    Cheers,

    Luca
