Ill add my voice to the chorus of bonsoy fangirls..
And I will too. I dont drink soy milk as a rule. I am neither Vegan or Lactose intolerant, but as the years are rolling along, I am looking for something that is able to "relieve" the symptoms that make me a female.

A good friend of mine is not a big milk drinker and as she is in her early 50s she recommended to me to start taking some sort of Soy product. To this I shuddered and made a face like

I am now drinking Bonsoy with my coffee. The first one I made was a little....rough. Only because it is soy and like I said I dont like it.

It textures great, and I am now into my first week with it and I am getting used to it ;D

Expensive..yes. Alot more than So good or Vita soy, but worth it.

    • Bonsoy right here! When steaming, it behaves very well and can produce good looking latte art too.

      • I have purchased for my wife most of the soy milk products out there and by far her favourite is the Macro brand soy milk (which I've only ever seen in Woolworths). Latte Art is barely doable and the taste seems to suit my wife. If anyone out there is still looking, give Macro a try.

        • Ok, and now for my two cents...

At an early age I was diagnosed as being acutely allergic to dairy AND wheat, dairy being the worse of the two. Apparently I have anti-bodies in my blood that choose to aggressively attack the stuff should it enter my body.

So I have a LOT of experience with soy milk.

When I was a kid I used to swear by Sungold Soy Milk - it really was soooooooo good. However, ~half way through primary school they changed their ingredients to include malt (derived from wheat...). So I had to look around. After trialing a number of "organic" (meaning "tastes like animal fieces") I then arrived at rice milk, and stayed with rice milk up until I found espresso.

Now since starting my coffee-life, I have searched around for the best additive to espresso. Here is what (after a LOT of experience) I have found:

          1. Bonsoy: Is awesome...if you can afford it. I find it compliments espresso very well, doesn't over power the cup as some others do, and perfectly froths. It also is made up of really good (healthy) ingredients.
          2. So Good Barista: Also is made up of good ingredients. Froths well. Taste is a little over-powering in the cup, but overall is pretty good.
          3. Vitasoy Soy-Milky: the current iteration of this (and yes there has been a few) is ok. It's far too thick (full version) for my liking, and distracts from the taste of espresso as opposed to complimenting it. The Lite version isn't much better, if you can stomach it's poorer taste. Both froth ok.
          4. Aldi Soy (I've completely forgotten the brand name, but there's only one they stock anyway): it's cheap, at around $1.50/L. It's not that bad, and in fact some batches were actually pretty good. Those good batches frothed well, and maintained the taste of espresso in the cup. HOWEVER, each and every batch is inconsistently made, and so every week you would need to adjust your technique to compensate for it. Some weeks though no matter what you did it was just plain crap - bad froth, bad taste. And the ingredients aren't exactly the healthiest, having a lot of additives.
          5. Coles Brand Soy (full): At $1.61 now you'd expect this to perform fairly poorly. BUT! to me, this milk is almost as good as Bonsoy, and for a 3rd the price. It froths very well, and in the cup more than allows the driving espresso through. It certainly surprised me at first, so I went back for more. It's consistency is also very good. To me the only real issue is that I now have to get in early before Coles sells out - which tells me I'm not the only one who thinks it's good. I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS! (The Lite version however can stay on the shelf...) Oh, and the ingredients aren't the greatest, but ok.

I should also note that I couldn't really find any difference between the long-life and non-long life versions (of all milks). As long as you pre-fridge the milk anyway (i.e. don't go straight from pantry to milk jug), it all ends up the same.

          • My wife and I switched to using soy in coffee because it is supposed to be better for your health than milk...don't really know about that. But what I do know is that after acquiring a taste for the soy in coffee (and it does take some adjustment if you usually use milk), you would never go back to milk. In fact milk tastes horrible in coffee once you have moved to soy and you wonder why anyone would use milk. As for brands...definitely avoid the malt-free types. The malted ones give that special sweetness that seems to blend magically with the crema. Definitely some soys are better tasting than others. Best to try a few and pick the one most enjoyable to your tastes. Our favorites are Vitasoy red carton (although I have tried purple and green and found not much difference). If you can afford Bonsoy then go for it...it is definitely the best and produces the best smooth silky froth. As for Vitasoy silkiness in the froth, my Rocket does an ok job but does not get velvety smooth as it does in the good barista coffee shops, but still pretty good nontheless. Make the change and be rewarded.

I don't normally get involved in these discussions cos everyone has their own opinions and I don't really want to start a great debate, but everyone assumes this to be true while there's no evidence to support this - in fact the exact opposite is likely true.
Best advice I can give is to do your own research - this involves actually reading research papers rather than reading what someone else might have to say about them (or reporters who these days like to report what someone said about what someone said... avoids the difficult bit of thinking for themselves, I guess).

I made some major improvements to my health a couple of years ago once I actually started reading the nutritional research that is carried out, and discovered the conclusions are often not what you'd expect.

Anyway - ultimately it's your own choice, and I don't want to derail the thread too much as it's not really the forum for this sort of discussion...

              • I'm lactose intolerant and started drinking soy almost 10 years ago now. So, in my opinion home-made soy is the best in terms of frothing and taste (as long as you add vanilla to the batch). For store bought I always use So Good Barista Soy.

                  • I have seen zymil lactose free and wondered about it, I might give it a go then! I'm not sure if I can drink the a2 milk. I'm not sure that one is worth a stomach ache to find out!

                          • There is a new Soy Drink on the Australian market that is AMAZING!! Processed beautifully and with loads of care. 18% whole organic soybeans and energised water. That's it!!
It's from Switzerland and is called Soyana Swiss Soy Drink Natural. And the best bit is it froths superbly!! Worth trying!!
