    Re: Soy Milk?!?!

    Off topic, I know.
Its my understanding (an correct me if Im wrong) that the population is generally defficient in iodine, made worse because the dairy industry no longer uses iodine based sterilisers. Dairy was the main source of a much needed trace element supply in our diets. Iodised table salt anyone.....
And I dont want to set off a "flouride-in-water" like discussion.

Back on topic, I would never have entertained any soy substitute for milk, but I have developed a taste for it so now I am intrigued to try it out.

    Re: Soy Milk?!?!

National foods have got back to me with:

"The Vitasoy Original has an Iodine reading of <0.05mg/kg or part per
    million."

So you (healthy adult) would have to consume over 20kg (about 20 litres) of Vitasoy Original a day to overdose on iodine.

They recalled bonsoy because of high iodene levels. Its not supprising it has high iodene levels as there is a seaweed product in the ingredients. Ive never heard of iodene causing problems.
Google the recall. It was because of problems caused by iodine.

    Vitasoy Original also contains Kombu

    http://www.vitasoy.com.au/Assets/Files/a9bc8f3b-f641-432c-9108-cb6c8db7c5ad.pdf

Kombu is HIGH is Iodine, although being a natural product the level vary
    http://www.vrg.org/journal/vj2006issue2/vj2006issue2iodine.htm#table2
(One inch of Kombu in this table weighs only one gram)

I have sent a query to National foods asking if it is tested for Iodine.
    Anyone know if it is?

We use Woolworths Own Organic soy, theyve recently repackaged it and lost the Woolworths brand (still says it on the shelf label). I find this nearly as good as Bonsoy at less 1/2 the price). The worst one is So Good, I like it to drink but in Coffee its terrible.

Vitasoy has pearl barley, which has gluten and would be a problem with coeliac people
I have Vitasoy "Soy Milky" lite at the moment in fresh from the fridge and also longlife. They are both gluten free so fine for coeliacs.

All the opinions above that relate to taste are subjective.
    Taste is a personal thing.
What one person thinks is the best tasting soy another may think is the worst.

    Hey guys,

Here is my two cents. My partner is a respected barista in Melbourne, she is also lactose intolerant. She swears by the original Vitasoy (red) but also enjoys the calci-plus vitasoy (purple) that I use at my work. She says that Vitasoy blends well with coffee, where as Bonsoy "cuts" the coffee.

As a side note as a barista, I find long-life Soy is very difficult to use. Its very difficult to steam, and is very watery. The refridgerated "fresh" Soy is a lot easier, and produces nice micorofoam. I dont know if there is a difference in taste. Ill give you an update in the near future.

    Cheers

Personally, I agree that Bonsoy is NOT the best soy. I am not sure what you mean by "cut", Bonsoy has got a seaweed smell/flavor (try to taste the shusi wrap or nori  if you dont know what I mean). I think this is inferior to my coffee. I prefer vitasoy original but the calci plus Vitasoy is very appealing, it even seem to boost the coffee flavors. I will try Sungold.
I drink soy as milk cause me problems with my ENT. I still think full cream milk tastes better.
Vitasoy has pearl barley, which has gluten and would be a problem with coeliac people. Pure Harvest is the soy that is gluten free, it lacks the creaminess and smoothness, it has a little sugar cane flavor. A sacrifice for the coeliac and lactose intolerant people.

    Re: Soy Milk?!?!

I have just bought BonSoy in Woolworths in the longlife milk section.  Having not tried this brand before and being new to having soy in coffee I was happy with the taste (not as strong as some soy milks which alter the taste of the coffee too much in my opinion)...but at over $4 a litre, double the price if some others I will have to find an alternative.

Just for those who are having difficulty finding BonSoy in Melbournes east, found some in Box Hill. Shop called Marys Natural Foods on Carrington Road, close to Station Street end.

    Re: Soy Milk?!?!

Strange... I always use soy milk in my coffee and have never had any curdling:S Been using vitasoy milky or the green version....

Just tried Australias Own Organic Soy milk - in the long life section at supermarkets and its even better... I might be switching brands haha

    Soy and Salt/Acid

    Hi

We have an ongoing problem with Soy milk curdling with our coffee. I read on a thread here that it may be to do with a salt in the coffee. When I taste the coffee that curdles it seems the coffee has a stronger acid taste.

Is there a way to avoid this issue of coffee curdling Soy?

    regards

    Re: Soy Milk?!?!

Am trying life without dairy at the moment as an experiment. Bought some Bonsoy and was quite surprised. Stretching / texturing / art was pretty straightforward and the taste worked for me.

Wouldnt be unhappy to stay with it, except for crazy the price of the stuff!

    Re: Soy Milk?!?!

    Hi there,
hope i can help out a bit. I use the red Vitasoy and mastered it almost to milk like texture. the trick is that i always steam it before i start an espresso shot, normally you would aim to have the milk ready at the same time as the shot. But when you let it stand just for a little while and then give it a good swirl wonders are happening. Normal milk would start to separate fairly quickly but the soy actually likes a short rest. Try not to overstretch it , find the point quickly as possible and whirlpool it nicely. You even can do Latte art when you mastered it....and the taste is sooo sweet, nothing like shitake mushrooms ;-)
