    Re: Soy Milk?!?!

I have been drinking soy milk for just under six months now.
I usually use alpro soy and as someone who drinks a lot of coffee i think its great. I didnt realize just how much milk clogged me up.

Hi, l use Vitasoy Calci- Plus , lve been using soy for years and find l like this the best ( the Vitasoy Soy Milky is ok and is a good backup if l cant get the Calci-plus )
Most other soys l cant stand....even Vitasoy "original" is pretty bad ....

What is the consensus on Bonsoy at the moment? I still havent found a good alternative. For those interested, you can get a 6-pack carton of Bonsoy at Vitamin Me for $20.

            Re: Soy Milk?!?!

Is it safe to drink? Some cafes use it still like BBB and De Clieu. But other baristas seem to still have a distrust for it ever since it was pulled off the shelves.

Not sure exactly how safe it is, but probably safer than drinking breast milk made by another species...

Cows milk does have some documented health risks and, so far as I can tell, no proven health benefits. Coffee tastes better without it anyway (good coffee that is).

It wouldnt have been allowed back on the shelves if it wasnt safe.  :

If some "baristas" distrust the Health Authority, on what basis would that be? Some expertise perhaps?
                Methinks not.

                  Re: Soy Milk?!?!

Haha I think its because the authorities are sometimes one step behind. If the authorities knew it all it wouldnt have needed to be pulled off the shelf before.

Either way I still use it everyday (just for one in the morning!) as I cant find anything that tastes as good. Who me? is right though. Espressos are the way to go!

Or cold process, or ristrettos, or filter, or syphon, or ....

Mind you, Ive never tried soy milk, so I suppose I ought to just in case Im missing something special.

Do try it out. It doesnt work well with all beans though. I use it out of necessity (lactose intolerent) but I find that there is greater balance with soy rather than the distinct taste of normal milk which takes away from the flavour of the espresso.

They cant be everywhere at once and my understanding is that a very small number of people were affected.
It could have been argued that the recall was overkill, as in Japan for example they ingest a lot more iodine on a regular basis and dont suffer any ill effects.

Would you want all milk products off the shelf just because you are lactose intolerant?

Im currently using the Bonsoy I opened the other day and am experimenting with the temperature I texture to.
This mornings coffee was very smooth and tasty.

@Thundergod - I know the recall was about the iodine levels. However, I have no qualms with still drinking it. I know a fair few Japanese friends who would import Bonsoy directly even when the recall was in effect.

I brought up the issue because there are a few cafes where the baristas love to give me lectures on the danger of drinking Bonsoy when I ask for it. Im sure that its possibly because they have our best interests at heart or if we were being cynical, maybe its because margins are hit when they use Bonsoy instead of other alternatives.

Milk is great and there is no reason it should be recalled just because part of the population is lactose intolerant. We have a lot of farmers to support here.

Its a little different steaming soy as the optimal temperature is lower than for milk. Just be aware of the curdling when mixed with more acidic (?) beans. Usually recommended with darker roasts I believe.
                            Bon

@Barryd - Thanks for the thread. Will look into those supplements. But I must say Im very happy with Bonsoy for now.

Zero issues with Bonsoy apart from the price of it (It is about the most expensive around is why cafes may bag it). Steams so much easier than some others I have used (milkshake bubbles), customers prefer it (happy to see it back) and even I dont totally hate it  Dropped a couple of litres today through the machine.

If your local Baristas are preaching the dangers of Bonsoy currently then THEY ARE WRONG and tell them to watch out for libel action soon if they keep it up  :.

Personally I like the strong taste of Bonsoy over So good. Bonsoy makes the best soy mochas as it has a strong malty sweetness, however it is true it needs a bold coffee to go with it!
