Do try it out. It doesnt work well with all beans though. I use it out of necessity (lactose intolerent) but I find that there is greater balance with soy rather than the distinct taste of normal milk which takes away from the flavour of the espresso.
Well, on that recommendation and the belief that its worth trying most things at least once, I picked up some organic soy milk from Aldi today, well see how it goes tomorrow.

Not sure of course how it compares to other soy milks, but this was the only one I could find that wasnt loaded with unwanted additives.

Hopefully you like it =) I must say though, the balance for me is only with Bonsoy. Other soys add a different taste which is not to my liking, as well as being harder to texture.

Well, I tried a soy milk flat white first thing this morning, then had a short mac a bit later. It really doesnt work for me - I think Ive just got so used to unadulterated coffee that anything else just seems wrong to my taste buds.

Having said that, the type of beans and roast obviously count for a lot. I used Amanti golden moka for my taste test, because I just picked up a kilo for another little experiment - not my favourite coffee for espresso (that would be ceja de selva right now), but it is obviously designed to work well in milk and Ive got quite a bit to use up.
I think some of the more acidic beans might work for me as soy macchiattos, but for now Im happy with straight shots.

Certainly for anyone concerned about the ethical or health issues with dairy consumption, organic soy is worth a try, everyones tastes differ and it certainly isnt offensive. The main problem with the mainstream soy milk brands is the high calcium content, but organic is ok on that front.

Now I just have to find a use for the remaining soy milk. Might try it in a muffin recipe Im working on.

Hmm I think you cant go past Bonsoy. Its the most organic out of all the brands on the shelves (most expensive too), its made 100% in Australia and it has the cleanest taste, it really isnt sweet compared to most of the other brands. And if you go to any good cafe you will notice they use Bonsoy.

Try not to drink too much soy milk too people. A lot of studies showing that its a carcinogenic. Test show that two cups of soy a day can alter a womans menstrual cycle as well. Do a little google and you will see quite a bit of research. In saying that what are the effects of two cups of coffee a day... or more!
I second bon soy. I hate soy milk... Exept bon soy. Warning about the dangers of drinking soy regularly if your a bloke though....

So the coffee will decrease the risk of prostate cancer but the soy milk will increase the risk of breast cancer?

I need rice milk at home for my girlfriend. Need to check if she is ok with soy.

Anyone using rice milk that can suggest the best way to prepare it for coffee? It seems really watery...

Might be worth trying a different one.

I have textured it without issue whatsoever.

I have tried a few soy milks and the one I like best is the red vitasoy, but after reading this thread I am going to conduct a trial into the different soy milks and report back.

Today I used So Good normal and light from the fridge. The normal one steamed better than the light one and the microfoam also lasted longer with the normal one.

One key piece of dietary advice for preventing and treating prostrate problems is to eliminate soy. Soy has oestrogen-like properties and its use will exacerbate/cause prostate problems.
Note I used the word "problems" and not cancer.
There are three prevalent prostate conditions; enlarged prostate, infection of the prostate (prostatitis) and cancer.
Elevated oestrogen levels in men is associated with a myriad of problems, including atherosclerosis, blood clots, arthritis, and prostate problems, including prostate cancer. It seems elevated oestrogen levels are directly correlated to the development of prostate cancer.
Recent news bulletins have disclosed that PSA tests and prostate biopsies prevent nothing. They merely diagnose an existing condition.

My tongue-in-cheek comment aside, yes, soy products contains phytoestrogens (phyto = of plants). Note that oestrogen is primarily a female hormone but males have low levels as well, primarily required for sperm production.

Thanks for the info Kevo but I couldnt help wondering whether one could consume a certain quantity of soy product without ill-effect or whether the cholesterol reduction capacity of using soy products far outweighs any risk of prostate problems.

Im a bit leery of medical advice via the Internet, especially when the adviser has no understanding of the medical history of anyone who might read the advice. Im delivering my own soapbox decree that anyone who posts medical information on the net should be aware of this.

Kev, do you know of any strong evidence actually linking soy phytoeostrogens and development of physiological responses in humans? Im currently studying in the health sciences and having just recently had a few lectures on soy and associations, our conclusion was pretty much dont worry about adverse health effects for casual consumption.

A few of which, often would not progress to the point of ill effect over the course of someones life. So really, there are some arguments not to concern with certain tests, as you might receive a diagnosis that will induce a lot of emotional stress, when the disease never would have hurt you! By no means am I saying dont get tested though...

Yeah, soymilk is deadly stuff. Thats why the Chinese and Japanese died out - from drinking it for centuries. Oh hang on, theyre still alive, make up about a third of the world population and are renowned for the old age they can often acquire over and above westerners.
