  • Breville CAfe Roma ESP8C: FINALLY! :D

    Either Im not getting it, or my machine is not geared up for this? I have a Breville ESP8C or Cafe Roma

    Can someone with this tell me if this machine is capable of making milk that is latte art-worthy?

    *sigh of satisfaction* I have finally learnt how to texture latte-art worthy milk on my Breville. I swear it wouldve been easier to do it with some fancy machine, but I stuck by this little critter...

    If anyone has this machine, Ill try to post my tips here

    Now, onto learning how to create latte art!

        Grrr, I take it back My microfoam is NOT RIGHT!

        When I pour it into a clear glass, I can see the layer of milk and the layer of foam (I did the bang and swirl beforehand).

        Where am I going wrong? Or is this machine just not capable?

          If youre able to post a pic it would help tashie. Therell always be some foam on top, and as it settles, more will slowly rise to the surface.

            Ill give this a go, tashie, seeing as youve had lots of views and no help...

            Id say difficult and probably that your machine is not capable...

            One thing you can help us help you with is...by telling us how long you think it takes to get your milk to temp?

            Do these machines have good dry steam? Or is it wet and not very hot?

            Would you like to give a brief outline of your current technique and see if we can pick anything up with the way you do things?

                  I began to produce reasonable microfoam from this machine shortly after coming to this site, which unfortunately for the cafe roma also led to me upgrading to an HX machine, thus cafe roma is no more

                  Ok... my first step was something I started doing but Im not sure if I should recommend (but it worked for me). That was to remove the water tank and leave the steam switch on. The machine makes the *ffft! ffft! ffft!* noise as usual... hopefully the pump is expelling most the water from the line and thermoblock allowing it to get dry and HOT. You shouldnt see anything coming out of the wand (usually 10-20 seconds with the tank out). Put the tank back and the first water to hit that thermoblock will vapourise instantly and youll get powerful dry steam that you would otherwise not see from this machine. This should last for a couple of minutes like this so plenty of time to texture the milk.

                  Next get two coffees worth of milk in a pitcher (preferably 500mL because the supplied jug is a tad small). place the tip of the steam wand just below the milk surface and get that powerful steam going. Try get the wand to the side of the jug to start the whirlpool - my experience is that the whirlpool technique works the best for the cafe roma. Lower the jug slightly so you can hear the *ffft ffft ffft* sound of surface air being pushed into the milk. It is better this is subtle and not masses of air going into the milk or expect big bubbles.

                  If you are using a thermometer lower the wand tip slightly at 60C and maintain the whirlpool. At this point you shouldnt be allowing the surface of the milk to break and allow air in. In my mind Im guessing until ~70C (or when you stop) the bigger bubbles under the surface are being blasted into smaller bubbles by the wand steam and hopefully finishing the milk texture.

                  See how you go - Im certainly no pro like some of the people on this website... I just try silly things like running the machine with no water to enhance the steam Maybe I was secretly trying to break the machine to force my upgrade - however I did find my results improved dramatically when I started this technique and the machine still functions as new today (donated to the parents). I even managed a couple of tulip lattes to my surprise.

                    2. Ok, this is possibly where Im going wrong - I let the steamer go for about 40 seconds before I started using it and this seemed to work better. How do I know if the steam is right? For me I put a cloth under it and when it looks like the cloth is just damp and not wet then I start steaming. Takes quite a while on this machine though.

                    Im using the Breville supplied jug, filling it to about .5-1cm below the start of the spot (about halfway). Then I run the steamer til i get dry-ish steam, and then turn it off. Put the steam wand into the jug facing the wall of the jug (I get a whirlpool in 2 seconds). I do this for about 7-10 seconds then I slowly bring the steamer wand to the middle of the jug and lower it all the way to the orrom of the jug. (I shoudl really get a milk thermometer i know).
                    Then I tap the jug on the table and swirl the milk .

                    I usually pour it into a clear glass to see how I did afterwards. (still trying to get a good picture of this). I seem to get 3/4 or more hot milk and then a fine microfoam at the top. Is this normal or is the milk texture supposed to be uniform throughout?

                      It used to take me atleast a couple of minutes to heat milk for two lattes. My experience with the cafe roma was that the steam was wet and not enough power behind it. Given its using a thermoblock to achieve steam, the method I described earlier was the only way I could get drier and more powerful steam - a direct result of a hotter thermoblock. You cant adjust the pump speed with the cafe roma or program it to run hotter so you can only stuff around like I did. You could always try using distilled water in the tank which may lower your boiling point by 1-2 degrees but whether this makes a difference I wouldnt know.

                      I think you should stop texturing milk around 65 - 70 deg celcius, however I would bet a lot of people stop earlier to achieve difference tastes in the milk.

                        Ive made so many lattes (with not so much as a semblance of a heart OR rosetta) and I havent had the heart to throw them out so Im pretty close to caffeine poisoning I reckon. *ugggh* Am going to start tipping them down the sink now. *sigh*

                          It used to take me minutes for two (x200ml) as well in a 600ml jug. I never quite got perfect latte-art incorporated microfoam that my VBM Super is capable of, but got some pretty nice microfoam worthy of cappas. It might be possible - I just didnt use the Roma long enough . I upgraded.

                              my microfoam is cappa worthy but unpourable - diagnose it if you will...

                              it just seems like hot milk with foam on the top but not throughout the whole thing. i have tried latte art so many times and am failing miserably STILL. Gah!

                              maybe i need a new jug? stupid breville one. (isnt it easy to blame the equipment?)
