I might be submerging the wand too far?
    Yes you are.

Is it fine just below the surface to heat?
    Not in my opinion.
If you misjudge you will break the surface and stretch too much.
    Just a little deeper.
    Practise. Practise. Practise.

Hmm.. Im having similar issues. Im used to a Breville Cafe Roma, and with that machine Id skim near the surface to stretch, and plunge the wand as deep as possible to get a nice whirlpool.

With the 6910 I plunge the wand and it gets very loud, and whirls a bit, but basically leaves a mass of milkshake at the top.

If Im reading correctly, I might be submerging the wand too far? Is it fine just below the surface to heat? Or will this stretch more??

Im guessing you are using the standard Sunbeam jug.
    Its too big.
    By a 300ml one.

Maybe try a smaller jug. I have found I get a much greater whirlpool at home using a 300ml jug isntead of 600ml...apart from less waste it has the effect of double power (seeks like it with the lesser volume of milk). In my few experiences with large commercial machines I have found that you barely need to stretch in the same way as on a domestic machine which I think is due to the very powerful whirpool which sucks in more air...at least thats how my trainer explained it to me. So by using a smaller jug I think you can create the same effect as more power.

Another thing, when you move the steam wand to the side and slightly tilt the jug, the milk should begin spinning. If you find it difficult to get the milk moving, it probably indicates lack of steam pressure.

I think...that might be the problem. I find it hard to get the milk swirling. If that makes sense? I just used half of the 3L milk I bought today on practising. Been getting stares from all over the room! Why is it that I can get perfectly silky milk on the Cimbali at work and not likewise with this 6910?

    Argh!

To demonstrate what I mean, fill the milk jug with water and steam it like it was milk. It should make a high pitch screaming sound the entire time. If you get that with the milk, and the steam tip isnt too deep in the milk, then you have a problem.

My machine, when steaming milk will only scream if I submerge the tip deeply in to the milk. Other times it makes a ccchhh cchhh sound and a deep rumbling once the milk is nearing temp.

    By scream, you mean?
I know it makes all the usual sounds like srchh scrchhh-dont know how to type the sound out!

By the way the machine is brand new.

    Cyv,

Does the steam wand scream the entire time, as though you had it submerged too deep? If so, you might have a weak steam pump. My first machine did, spent two weeks figuring out where I was going wrong before returning it. New machine, no problems.

    Hey guys

Ive practised on almost 4L of milk and still havent yet perfected my milk. As with a lot of 6910 users, I cannot get the smooth silky texture like I do at work where I use a Cimballi.

I stretch (aerate) the milk for about 10-13 seconds before I tip the tip of the milk wand lower to massage the milk however even after getting the whirpool effect, the milk comes out bubbly and froth on top didnt seem to have incorporated into the milk. The froth still seemed detached from the milk thus causing it to be very runny and thin.

    Any tips?

I found using skim milk doesnt seem to work as well as full cream so i am sticking to that. They were using full cream at the Sunbeam course today and the texturing was easy as pie.
Im a complete noob to this coffee/cafe set and Im finding no problems with skim milk.

Mind you, Im yet to be critiqued by a true "expert".

this thread just made an enormous difference to my own milk results.

the whirlpool seems to be the key!

Thats why I took my own jug to work rather than use the Sunbeam one thats there.

One thing I have only recently discovered is just how sensitive to the right volume of milk the 6910 is.

I had been using a 600ml jug at home with the 6910 and a 500ml one at the shop with the Ikon.

I brought the 500ml home and have been using it recently for the morning lattes. Fills just under the spout for our acf108 300ml cups.

I had been having terrible trouble with the Mrss skim milk, big milkshake froth on the top, very stiff foam, big bubbles etc and was rarely getting the consistency right. When I changed jugs to the slightly smaller size, it all seems to have fallen into place. "touch wood" consistent microfoam, no milkshake effect etc, very pleased with the results.

My art isnt that spectacular, having probably done less coffees in the last 12 months than some Baristas do in a day, but at least the quality of the drink is better

    Sen

Unlike Dennis, I have access to a SB at work so use one almost every day.

    Dennis remembers correctly.

I have no trouble doing art using the SB.
    Whats the secret?
