  • Pura Cafe?

    Am looking to improve my milk frothing technique, has anyone used the Pura Cafe product? supposed to be specifically formulated for frothing.
    My results vary from excellent to pretty miserable using the same brand, obviously Im looking for consistency.
    Not much choice in milk products in my area however I can access Cafe in 3 litre containers. :-/

    Pure Cafe is formulated to froth better, but I really think standard full cream of Pura/Pauls/Generic is as good a place to start.
    Youve got a machine that is capable, its just technique now.

    I use home brand Coles/Woolworths on my Expobar and it does the job for me.

    I still get some that are too thick or thin, but most of the time, it is ME and not the milk.

    It just takes practice and consistency. I get the best results when I manage to get the jug position correct straight away. IE: Very little movement once the steam wand is in. Let the steam do its job and you can end up with lovely, glossy microfoam.

      Agree with that. I also use the generic supermarket milk and premium milk isnt that much better to justify the extra couple of bucks.

      I dont hold the jug, just place it on the drip tray, lower the wand to the top of the milk (in about the centre), hit the steam and then push the steam arm to the edge after the initial expansion to get the whirlpool. Then wait until the correct temp is reached (3-second rule or thermometer).

      Works nearly every time for me. The steam tip seems to find its own depth as the milk expands.

        Hey,
        I was in the same spot 6 months back. Just call a few milk companies. Try pura(daniel) or Procal(paul). Go to the best cafes in your area, see what they are using, i doubt any would use supermarket milk. I went around Moonee ponds, most were using procal and pura so i rang them two. They dropped off samples and i went from there. Easy.

          Have since tried Pura Cafe, verdict? not worth the effort, supermarket premium brands just as good.

            Thanks Flynn, will try that technique, I am having trouble texturing also, Chris @ TC gave me some pointers on Tuesday and it has certainly improved my efforts but not to what I am expecting to achieve and I know its me, the operator :-[

              Wait until the new year when the cows start eating hay and youll be complaining about how crappy ordinary milk is. A consistent protein level and consistent results is what cafes will be looking for.

                I used to think milks milk! ..... until I recently tried "a2 Milk" for frothing, and I was really surprised at the difference between it and "Dairy Farmers". Both in terms of taste and texture. According to the a2 milk label: Most dairy milk today contains 2 main types of beta casein protein, A2 and A1. Originally, all dairy cows produced milk containg only A2 beta casein protein. a2 milk is Natural and Additive free and even proposes possible protection against intolerances & allergies etc. Ive found it to be a pretty good option so far and would interested to hear if anyone else has tried it.

                  I have found that the Pura Cafe milk is better for making coffee than the Pura Full Cream milk though.

                    x2 on it being seasonal. Pura cafe is more consistent all year round.
