Re: Anyone used the stick on thermo for milk?
Just to take it slightly off the E61 tags I got a set of "Temptag" stick ons today. Quite different in concept as they come as 3 sticker sheets of 4 Tags, each of the 3 sheets is for a different Temp set points for full cream, Skinny and Soy.
Only had a first go tonight with a Hot Chocolate with the Full Cream recommended Tag on and it started to colour change at 61 or 62 using my normal thermometer (checked against a digital) and by 64 degrees the Tag had fully changed colour.
More playing to do but for a touch under $20 for the pack but worth the play to lose the clip on ones and the extra cleaning.

Re: Anyone used the stick on thermo for milk?
I got myself 2 of these and have been playing around with them for a week or two.
Theyre very useful and Ive done away with the dial thermometer when Im steaming the milk.
The main observations Ive made in the last week:
- Theyve been more useful to me than I first thought theyd be. Theyve unwittingly trained me to use the sound of the milk as a cue. Much more so than when I was using a dial thermometer. I think with the dial you spend more time looking at the tiny face to see when the milk is done, and less time feeling and listening. With the larger face of the stick-ons, you can take a proverbial step back and really watch and feel and listen to whats happening.
- On both the 600ml and 400ml jugs Ive got, I noticed that the stickers are about 5 deg. lower than the actual milk temperature (as verified by dial thermometer, a digital thermometer and the CS DMM thermocouple). Not a big issue for me and I just take the milk off the heat as the 70 degree square disappears.
(Oh and no dial thermometer means one less thing to clean up afterwards ;D)
Cheers,
Sean.

Re: Anyone used the stick on thermo for milk?
Just ordered a pair myself from E61. The standard clip on thermometer type p##s me off as I have found at times that the dial can turn on the shaft and as such change the "reading" >
. This should solve that issue

Well done and thank you.
Absolutely, thats the ideal scenario and would work for most of us but at the same time i can see a number of situations where more than one sticker would either be needed or simply desirable so its nice to see the boys at E61 have reacted to that and come up with such a generous offer.Originally posted by 555B56594E5859370 link=1275730916/14#14 date=1277795604I would suggest that once you train yourself with one jug the knowledge is transferable, at least that is my experience. I have put it on my most commonly used jug.

Re: Anyone used the stick on thermo for milk?
Ive been baristar-ing for a little over 4 months now and even in that short time Ive discovered my heat tolerance has built up. I had baby soft IT hands before.Originally posted by 555B56594E5859370 link=1275730916/11#11 date=1277791542I havent ever used thermometers just my hands but I have found that they give me a greater level of accuracy and I also have found that I am making the milk a little hot.
I really dont see it being necessary to stick one on every jug. Unless youve got a brain injury that prevents you from sensing heat, having it on a couple of your most commonly used jugs will help train you so when its not there you know when to stop.Originally posted by 7D7D7D370 link=1275730916/12#12 date=1277793887The only potential issue i can see is that unless the stickers are transferable, it would be a relatively expensive proposition for those of us who use a number of different jugs.

Re: Anyone used the stick on thermo for milk?
What a wonderful concept, at least in theory.
With my recent upgrade the rapid milk texturing that comes with quality machinery has been somewhat of a culture shock and whilst im getting good results my judgment of temperature is still quite inconsistent and whilst its not a huge issue, it would be nice to find something that can at least give me an accurate understanding of the heat i should be feeling at the appropriate temperatures.
The only potential issue i can see is that unless the stickers are transferable, it would be a relatively expensive proposition for those of us who use a number of different jugs.

Re: Anyone used the stick on thermo for milk?
Have been using this for about a week now and I love it. I havent ever used thermometers just my hands but I have found that they give me a greater level of accuracy and I also have found that I am making the milk a little hot. This is due to the heat tolerance of my hands building up and what used to be correct has moved a little. So far after about 7 times through the dishwasher no issues (not that I am expecting any).
I see this product as an excellent way of reducing one more variable in an environment when you have multiple employees. Also great for the home user so there is no doubt about what the temperature really is and they can have an accurate way of learning the characteristics of the ideal temp (sight, sound, feel).
The only thing I did wrong is put it on the wrong side of the jug so I have to look around it so if you get one put a bit of thought into where you put it (unlike me who just stuck it on).

Re: Anyone used the stick on thermo for milk?
Given any decent barista uses their hand as a "stick on thermometer", I cant see why it wouldnt work.

Re: Anyone used the stick on thermo for milk?
I was given one last week and have gotten used to it now.
Definitely less fiddly than the old "stick it in the jug" thermometer.
Reactions of the crystals is extremely fast.
It appears to stick very well but I havent given it a dishwasher test yet.

Re: Anyone used the stick on thermo for milk?
Not my video but heres a youtube clip of the thermometer in action:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zm2DkbXsOaY
It looks pretty neat to me... But then Im not really at the stage where I can feel/hear the milk well enough to know when its done.
Matt,
Do you have any other clips/videos of this in action that you could share?
Cheers,
Sean.
