  • Anyone used the stick on thermo for milk?

Just noticed it on the E61 advert post, anyone used one? How well do they stick, and how is the delay......i know they say liquid crystal is faster, but that depends on the thermal mass of the jug too........

    Looks cool though! 8-)

Re: Anyone used the stick on thermo for milk?

Actually I do have some on my jugs. They are very reactive, though Ive found on smaller jugs they tend to hit the 70 degree mark before my hand and ears tell me the milk is ready (Im talking a split second here). On a domestic machine this wouldnt be an issue at all.

One of the stickers can be seen in this piccy I took today: http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1274527580/25#19

Hi WScully - thank you for your query.

The Thermometer is completely dishwasher safe and has a long life. Maybe what we need to do is an independent "Ikea" style test. If anyone is interested in applying a thermometer to their favourite milk jug and washing it in a dishwasher everyday let me know and we can prove how durable the thermometer is.

There is a 3 degree adjustment on the thermometer to take into account the measurement lag based on the thickness of the jug. That is, it reacts a  3 degrees ahead of the actual temp. There will be differences between different jugs based on their thickness.

                Regards

Re: Anyone used the stick on thermo for milk?

Not my video but heres a youtube clip of the thermometer in action:

                  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zm2DkbXsOaY

It looks pretty neat to me... But then Im not really at the stage where I can feel/hear the milk well enough to know when its done.

                  Matt,
Do you have any other clips/videos of this in action that you could share?

                  Cheers,
                  Sean.

Re: Anyone used the stick on thermo for milk?

I was given one last week and have gotten used to it now.
Definitely less fiddly than the old "stick it in the jug" thermometer.
Reactions of the crystals is extremely fast.
It appears to stick very well but I havent given it a dishwasher test yet.

Given any decent barista uses their hand as a "stick on thermometer", I cant see why it wouldnt work.

Re: Anyone used the stick on thermo for milk?

Have been using this for about a week now and I love it. I havent ever used thermometers just my hands but I have found that they give me a greater level of accuracy and I also have found that I am making the milk a little hot. This is due to the heat tolerance of my hands building up and what used to be correct has moved a little. So far after about 7 times through the dishwasher no issues (not that I am expecting any).

I see this product as an excellent way of reducing one more variable in an environment when you have multiple employees. Also great for the home user so there is no doubt about what the temperature really is and they can have an accurate way of learning the characteristics of the ideal temp (sight, sound, feel).

The only thing I did wrong is put it on the wrong side of the jug so I have to look around it so if you get one put a bit of thought into where you put it (unlike me who just stuck it on).

Re: Anyone used the stick on thermo for milk?

What a wonderful concept, at least in theory.

With my recent upgrade the rapid milk texturing that comes with quality machinery has been somewhat of a culture shock and whilst im getting good results my judgment of temperature is still quite inconsistent and whilst its not a huge issue, it would be nice to find something that can at least give me an accurate understanding of the heat i should be feeling at the appropriate temperatures.

The only potential issue i can see is that unless the stickers are transferable, it would be a relatively expensive proposition for those of us who use a number of different jugs.

I would suggest that once you train yourself with one jug the knowledge is transferable, at least that is my experience. I have put it on my most commonly used jug.
