  • Rancilio three hole steam tip

My first posting - hope I have it right!

In a rash moment I bought a three hole steam tip through Whole Latte love.  They are supposed to be good.  Does anyone use them?  Or do I have a curiosity to pass on the the kids.

may as well put it on and see if you prefer it too the single hole tip. if you dont then swap it back.

Welcome aboard and congratulations on your fist post.

The Silvia makes excellent microfoam with its single-hole tip. Ive never tried using more holes. Im not tempted to. The reason, is that I can control the exact texture and amount of foam with the single outlet.

I have tried the three hole steam tip -
I am very happy with the original one hole.
As Robusto says much more control.

At the moment the HILO milk or lite milk in WA is very difficult to froth
My caps are really flat whites with chocolate at the moment.

what milk to you find gives you the best results for texturing - especially with regard to coffee art?

Dont do coffee art --- too many compromises need to be made to achieve something for the eyes, and not the mouth, where it counts.

Ive done Rev, full-cream, physical, lactose-free, long-life.... they all produce good results in microfoaming.

In my experience, and some might disagree, its the technique that counts, not the variety of milk.

I cant do art, but I tried for the first time A2 lite milk and it frothed beautifully. It was immediately noticeable in the ease that it frothed and the glossy texture afterwards. It was by far the best result Ive had in ages. It seemed less prone to blowing big bubbles too. Its more expensive so Im not likely to switch full time.

I like pauls and coles brand full cream, for low fat rev works ok. I dont like safeway brand or pura.

what compromises? I have found that normally when the art is good I have the milk at a pretty good temp, the perfect amount of crema on the espresso, and a dense creamy texture rather then fluffy foam.

My La pavoni has a three hole steam tip , it is the only one I have used and it seems to work well for me . I have heard people comlain before of the 3 hole but as I said , no trouble getting nice froth and texture .

Okay once you are a master steamer....I mean can steam perfectly microfoamed milk with your eyes literally closed or multitasking like cutting off a shot, setting up saucers, napkins and teaspoons whilst still steaming.....then technique no longer matters and the type of milk does. Home-baristas however should concentrate on technique more than the type of milk used.
