Yes jimmys I am milking cows near Deni and have been here doing so for 30 years. My Missuss Dad had a Soldiers Settlement dairy farm at Boorcan and also later one at Barongarook before she married me. I notice you are in the Otways not that far from these places.   A total of 50 years knowledge of milking  for her. All that time she has drunk unpasteurised milk and she has never had any problems with illness caused by such.  Such milk so good and creamy. Now we  produce milk for M.G. who market the Barista Milk product.
Experimenting with and tasting many milks in our coffees  is so much fun.
Enjoy the Demeter milk. The Demeter milk prices  I quoted per litre were found on the internet.
Hi Herbie, I grew up on a dairy farm in Ardmona near Shepparton - recently moved to a farm near Forrest. raising organic (and later BD when I get time) beef to sell directly to punters. I notice you have an Otto - hows it going? I recently got one - still trying to get good milk texturing.

I wish we had access to more products where the producers are treated fairly. Farmers markets do this really well. How good would it be if there was a way to easily buy great milk direct and pay the producer? CS milk anyone?

There is no way Ill buy the cheap stuff like $1/L milk from the biggies as their motivation is pretty obvious.

Thats nasty, worse when Coke is 4 times the price and Petrol is 3 times the price.
I was standing in the queue at woolworths this morning getting a bottle of water (600mL) for $2.40, and looked over at the $2 milk for 2L. Made me sad.

Our price at the moment is 47 cents per litre for superb milk.
    (slightly off the Angus topic)

Seriously? That is all you get for all the capital outlay and huge endless effort?

Thats nasty, worse when Coke is 4 times the price and Petrol is 3 times the price. Surely a healthy staple should be in the same ball park.

So what milk do you use by choice?
ie: do you ever buy milk or do you mostly use your own unpasteurised?

No worries. The price I got was probably a wholesale and not a retail. I would expect it to be around the $3/L mark retail (although not as high as $3.60/L).
I dont drink milk so I cannot comment on the flavour. However it textures very very nice.

Hi Herbie, yes, I realise Demeter certified milk is all over Australia I was just referring to the one that Demeter have actually branded themselves and yes, it comes from the farm you mentioned near Nathalia/Waiia. Its amazing stuff - i visited the farm a couple of years ago when still in drought - it was amazing in comparison to the barren country around it. Are you milking cows at Deni?

Would a cafe pay $3.80 for a litre of Demeter Whole Milk or $6.80 for 2 litres?
Last event I did we bought Demeter milk, it was only $2.10 per litre. The two local cafes that use it are paying about $2.20/L.

    Re: Angus Milk

The Demeter Certified Bio-Dynamic milks are available all over Australia. Producers of this milk must meet certain stringent guidelines re feeding cows supplements etc. Google in and you will find producers in most States. Makes interesting reading. We could say we were Bio-Dynamic during the long drought in producing our milk. We could not afford chemical fertilisers which are a no-no for Bio-Dynamic milks. Money was and still is very scarce at the coal face of milk production. Our price at the moment is 47 cents per litre for superb milk.
Our milk tests 4.9% fat. Demeter milk 5.3% fat. It is the protein in the milk that "froths". We find that the froth capability in our coffees differs due to protein readings in the different seasons and feed products used. Yes even producing quality milk is a science.
Would a cafe pay $3.80 for a litre of Demeter Whole Milk or $6.80 for 2 litres? There in lies the question re use.
Good to try but profits are a must in business. There is a farm at Nathalia near Shepparton that produces Demeter milk.

    Re: Angus Milk

There is a milk in Victoria, although only really available through organic shops, produced at a farm north of Shepparton. It is the Demeter Biodynamic milk - beautiful stuff. Does anyone use it? What do you think is the best for milk texturing: homogenous, or unhomogenous.

This reminds me of Mrs Bucket from Keeping up Appearances on TV. She asked the milkman delivering her bottle of milk, "what is the name of the cow that my milk came from?"

    Barry

is this a joke? Angus milk? youd have to milk about 5 of them to get enough to make a Cafe latte. its a beef breed, not a dairy breed but someone will tell me it is actually happening and the joke will be on me. unless of course, Angus is the name of the guy who milks the cows.

    Re: Angus Milk

At the risk of asking the obvious: Why would people want to buy milk from a specialist beef cow rather than a specialist dairy cow?

To me - Dad was a dairy farmer - buying Angus milk is about on par with buying instant coffee for the extra antioxidants that accrue from the addition of green beans.

    Best wishes, Russell
