    I admit that the nearest I've ever seen was the start of a heart shape, maybe once, maybe twice in the last 8 months...

    I'm more than happy with the coffee from a taste/texture perspective but what can I say, I'm clearly doing something wrong from an art perspective.

    I don't try 'every' time but sufficiently to have I do attempt to make a shape most times.

    My suspicion lays with the cup I use - Do I admit to using a coffee mug? yes.

    I'd say my micro-foam cant be that bad, lets face it after 8 month's I must have got it right a reasonable amount of the time.

    What do I think is going wrong... To me it's as though the top later (of coffee/milk mixture) isn't fluid enough to move out of the way of the new coffee being poured into the cup. Even if I see a nice layer of white milk forming underneath it never seems to break though.

    Daughter and I have a Barista booking at JB (date to be arranged...) am hoping I can be given a few pointers

    A mug would make it more difficult, especially the mug holding the milk jug LOL

      cant quite understand the explanation you have there about new coffee being poured in... but maybe you can try tilting the cup on its side while pouring to reduce the distance between the milk jug spout and the coffee surface? that way the foam can sit nicely on top of the crema.

        Mugs are more difficult but I get tulips a lot and failed rosettas.

          I had similar problems when I first started on my home machine; despite the fact I found it easy to do tulips in the espresso course I went on. I put it down to it being more difficult to get the milk right at home.

          Sounds like you might be letting a bit too much air in, and getting a layer of 'foam' on top?

          You're not after foam for art; you want the air incorporated into the whole volume of milk.

            Can't comment on the milk but when I was first using mugs, it was generally utter failure. I then moved to rounded cups for a while to get the hang of things which definitely helped and now while I still fail at rosettas, I can manage a heart in almost anything (if I don't flub the milk too much :P )

              Thanks for replies. I'll try again this weekend, I bought some nice rounded cups back in jan but never used them.

              Would have tried earlier but been a really chaotic past 7 days - Saturday was interesting, I had to work overnight and took my machine and grinder to work and got through near 1kg of self roast - some of which resulted in some interesting patterns but at 4am I was more interested in the caffeine content than appearance.

                Quick vid you may find of help. P.s round bottom cups are easier, but I find the durlex cups are really good at keeping it nice n toasty!

                      Attended a Home Barista course this weekend with my Daughter - Was her 15th Birthday pressie - I'd much rather she was geared up to work part time at local bakers etc. who frequently ask for someone to man the coffee machine than work in the local McDonalds...

                      Was pretty much able to pull some hearts straight away once we'd moved onto the milk section using a standard sized latte glass, albeit my foam production technique was way off par prior.

                      After the event at home was pretty much in the same boat with our mug sized drinks, switching back to the smaller glass I was able again to produce some 'shapes'.

                      Am fairly convinced it's a case of my skills not being able to work with the harder profile the mugs create.
