  • Frothing Milk with the EM6910

    Hi

Just would like to know if EM6910 owners are happy with the quality of milk froth they achieve with their EM6910.

Putting Milk types aside for the moment:-

    a) Can you attain good microfoam quality?
    b) Have you re-programmed the machine to achieve this?
    c) How does it compare to the EM6900 for frothing?

    cheers
    Tibee

    In a nutshell

    a) yes
    b) yes...drier steam
    c) no idea..never owned a 6900.

Its gives me reasonable results. Microfoam as good as Silvia, but just not as abundant and steam isnt as powerful. Mind you, EM6910 is very very slow to steam. Im used to steaming monsters I guess.

      a) ABSOLUTELY - But it takes practice. Putting the jug in the fridge helps
      b) NO - But I might do what Wushoes did
      c) APPEARS BETTER but hard to tell. I use a 6900 at work and a 6910 at home

        Hi Tibee,

I use silvia at home and the 6900 at work and I found out that the 6900 is more easy to produce the microform compare to silvia or other prosumer machines. Due to the weak steam that 6900 produce, you have more time to stretch and swirl the milk
compare to other machine that produce stronger steam which enable you to find the sweet spot easily (which is good for the frothing beginner ).

        Hope this help ;D

        Cheers,
        Things

Silvia might be tempermental in the brew thermostat department --- but when it comes to producing absolutely perfect microfoam, I find it absolutely perfect. and must sing its praises.

The only "trick" I employ is to keep the pitcher in the fridge..... But, I suspect that even without doing this, there would be ample time to steam milk before things get too hot.

In fact, I usually have the desired degree of microfoam well before 65º is reached.... And thats with the steam knob turned full on.

yea after the machine at work which heats 2 lattes worth in about 10 seconds (ive never actually timed it) the thrity second silvia is very relaxed and I get exelent microfoam on it.

The thing about faster steam is that it will also give you a better whirlpool so although things might go faster it takes less time to recombine any accidental bubbles.

Re: Frothing Milk with the EM6910

Ok....I was steaming on the 6910 to make a cappucino today for an aunt....and guess what.....microfoam as good or better than the silvia and any other commercial cafe machine ive layed my hands on.

down to technique and experience on correcting/adjusting your technique as you steam in case something goes wrong....like a slip of the hand causing huge surface bubbles etc.

It took me a short time to start getting good microfoam but now I love it.
Havent do any programming on the machine yet.

                    Hi Wushoes

Can I ask you this. If you pull the Steam Wand out towards the left front corner of your 6910 machine, which side of the steam tip nozzle faces the corner of your 6910. (see attached photos for explanation)

                    Regards
                    Ti Bee

I understand what you are asking...but for what reason I have no idea....

                      I will check later

Re: Frothing Milk with the EM6910

I really dont think it matters Ti Bee, but for interest sake mine is actually the corner of the bevel and flat edge pointing at corner of machine. The flat edge is only there to allow a tool to be used to remove the tip i think.

                        cheers,

                        mick.

exactly what I was thinking....as it is only a single steam hole...and orientation on a multi holed tip wouldnt make any difference anyway.

my steam tip was really hard to unscrew....

Re: Frothing Milk with the EM6910

                            Hi

Why do I ask the question regarding the orientation of the Steam Wand Tip.

I was having immense problems frothing milk, where I was getting unwanted bubbles no matter what I did. So I decided to look back on a photo I had taken of my last EM6900. In the photo the Steam Wand Tip was orientated as in photo sample (A) of my previous posting. Unlike the EM6910 which was orientated as in the photo sample (B). So I unscrewed the steam wand tip so that the orientation matched that of sample (A) and frothed some milk and it was an improvement on what I was getting before.

If you think of the milk swirling round in your jug, and it suddenly hits a flat edge on the steam tip, that edge could create a disturbance in the milk resulting in bubbles of the wrong variety. However if the milk hits a nicely bevelled edge less disturbance is created in the swirling milk.

How is that for a theory ??

                            regards
                            Ti Bee

Yeah...but youre getting too technical....fluid mechanics and turbulent flow in milk...hahaha...now thats my realm of mechanical engineering...but seriously...youre over analysing....its all to do with technique...the flat edge is not big enough to cause a major difference.
