Milk to use in South Australia?

Hi guys

Just wondering what milk is best for coffees latte art and the such. Most caffee's ive seen seem to use pauls milk is that fine?

Also what is the difference between top shelf milk and say the coles or woolworths branded milk and could you give real life examples why one milk is better or worse?

My preference is Tweedvale for their taste, consistency and texturing, or any jersey cow's milk from companies such as BD farm, Fleurieu Milk Co & Alexandrina Milk Co - all are great, however, I find that Alexandrina is less consistent and harder to texture (ie depends on the season. Great tasting milk though)

If it is for just latte art, then suggest to use a "cheaper" milk, but still consistent, such as Pura milk - I have had occasions where the Coles and Woolies generic brands were not.

I agree with tucrazy - tweedvale is excellent. Easy to texture and tastes great. Another milk to try is zymil. It's pricey because its lactose free but gee its hard to beat taste wise. For some reason the 2 litre milk is nowhere near as good as the 1 litre milk in cartons. I contacted the company to tell them this but they claimed it comes out of the same factory and should be the same, but it must be what it's stored in that contributes to its taste.

Ultimately its going to come down to what you like. Buy a few different types and experiment. I've recently changed from a 4 hole steam tip to a 2 hole steam tip on my machine and that has also drastically changed the steaming outcome for the better, so yet another variable that points to you needing to experiment with your setup to find something that works for you.

I ditto Tweedvale. We have been using it for about 3 years. Other milk doesn't taste as nice anymore. We find the low fat variant has a nice taste in coffees and is easy to get the texturing right.

interesting comment Pretzal about the 1L verses the 2L. We think the 2L tastes really nice for the first few days but loses something after that. We were thinking of trying 1L cartons as we thought that having the milk open must deteriorate it even though it is in the fridge. We do shake it before we use it too!

The chances are that you won’t get much Tweed Vale milk in South Australia as it has a long way to travel.

There must be some good frothable milk available locally from SA cows

I don't understand? Tweedvale milk is from the adelaide hills...it is locally produced by SA cows? Unless there is another tweedvale milk company out there? You can get it from some green groucers and most good foodlands.

Yeh, but the cows think that they live in the Tweed valley in Nthn NSW. It affects their hormones, and it's basically like freighting the milk there.

Sorry, I am from NSW and to me the Tweed is on the North Coast of NSW. I didn’t know there was a Tweed in SA with cows there too. Drink the milk that suits you and enjoy your coffee.
