  • Pure harvest soy milk

    I've tried quite a few soy milks, and I must say I've found the Pure Harvest Original soy milk to give me the best results when making froth.

    I also like there is no added sugar, which seems to be a common theme in many soy milks.

    Has anyone else used it, or are there any other sugar free soy milks you can recommend?

    I've tried a couple of the 'barista formula soy milks', but still found this one to be better.

    With my new Bezzera Mitica I'm actually getting 'shiny' looking lattes

    But have you tasted it with coffee? Ick. I enjoy soy milks like this one with my cereal, but find it absolutely vile with coffee or when heated.

    The only sugar-free non-dairy milk I've enjoyed in my coffee is homemade almond milk made with only almonds and water -- and I enjoyed that a lot. I was amazed by how easily it frothed.

      I actually prefer the taste, it gives the coffee a mild nutty flavour.

      It tastes a lot better than most other soy milks I've tried.

      I find cows milk to be too 'bland'.

      Almond milk tasts terrible too when heated.

        I figured out something interesting tonight, if you don't 'cook' the soy milk long enough, it retains that pungent soy taste.
        So what I did tonight, by mistake, was actually let the milk continue to 'cook' for an additional 5 seconds after the jug was too hot to touch.

        I ended up with best looking (silky shiny on the latte), and best tasting (no pungent soy taste) milk.

          You don't need to boil it either

            Very interesting, I'll have to give this one a try. I generally buy plain old original Vitasoy for day to day use and used to get a decent microform from it with my Breville 820XL machine. Can't seam to get anything but soapy looking bubbles with it on the EM7000 though, so have been forking over the extra $$$ for Bonsoy.

              God knows why anyone would want to drink this highly processed soy anyway. You might as well drink petrol, it's not as bad for you.

                Yup... non-fermented soy products and the human body definitely were NOT made for each other

                  Unfermented soy products are not good for men, especially under 40, due to the phytoestrogen levels - especially in soy milk and soy protein powders.

                    Have to disagree with the last three comments. You are introducing the "natural fallacy" to this discussion by comparing food processing to petrol, there is no "meant to" and "not meant to" when it comes to our 21st century lifestyle. I, personally, drink soy milk because I am lactose intolerant and dislike the associated environmental impact and ethical dilemma of cow's milk anyway...

                    As for phytoestrogens, any oestrogen like effect on the human body has been widely debunked:

                      The real question is whether the phytoestrogens are any worse than the hormones in "baby cow growth fluid"...

                      I drink both, so I guess I'm screwed either way

                        I agree with the processed milk and BGH. I drink short blacks and pour over no milk. Very occasionally a piccolo with whole organic milk whenever possible.

                          I've been meaning to try Bonsoy for quite some time just to see what it's like. I finally got around to grabbing a couple of litres yesterday and tried it today. As Chris said it's daylight ahead of every other non-dairy milk I've tried. It textured nicely, got a good amount of froth in it, it was nice and glossy, it didn't separate and blow me down it didn't even taste too bad. If I'm ever in a position to be selling espresso based drinks I won't have any problem offering Bonsoy as a milk option. Thumbs up from me.

                              Just freakin expensive. Even wholesale we're paying $3.90 a litre
