Re: Cant get milk to spin

I have the same thing as Mal... I once had to make 4 milk based coffees, and 6 hot chocolates on my poor old Mokita,.. and this, unfortunately, is not a once off! Needless to say that I had to steam Milk 3 times... (poor mokita - having to refil th eboiler and let it build steam over and over!!),... but I can get milk for 4 drinks out of a 1-Ltr jug,.... but its no easy task,.. and most times the drinks are a touch low tide - not low enough for complaints tho :-/.

We like to entertain, and I constantly find myself at the coffee machine for 45mins or more towards the end of the night making coffees for our visitors - very regularly 6 drinks. Thats why I had had enough, and bought the La Pavoni Bar2t!! : 2 group heads, 14-Ltr boiler, heat exchanger... now were talking!!!! All I have to do is get her plumbed up and running!!! hahahahah ;D

I cant see the need for 1l jug at home unless you want to make about 3 hot chocolates at once.
Well, that was exactly my scenario when the Mokita had pride of place on the bench, up to three times per week. Since stepping back to Plunger brews, I dont seem to have quite so many visitors coming over for their daily hit :-?,

Im with Coffeechaser. I too use 300ml and 600ml jugs.
I use the smaller one for single coffees and the 600ml for two milk based drinks.

I cant see the need for 1l jug at home unless you want to make about 3 hot chocolates at once.

    Hi Sandro!

Try only filling the jug to about 40%. With the steaming wand, you could try and keep it up against the side of the jug...and not in the dead center of the milk, and keep the jug straight, not tilted on its side.

A 500ml jug is a good starting point to get the "whirlpool effect" going.

    Good luck!

Re: Cant get milk to spin

    Gday Sandro,

Welcome to CoffeeSnobs by the way [smiley=thumbsup.gif].

I used to own an Imat Mokita which is basically the same machine but without the grinder. There were times when, due to relos or friends coming over, that I had to stretch more milk than usual and on those occasions I always reached for my trusty 1.0Lt jug.

On the Mokita, it was possible to remove the "frothing aid" from the end of the Steam Wand but I dont know if this is possible on the Nemox. I suspect though, if you are using the Wand with this so-called "aid" still attached, this is the reason you are finding it difficult trying to stretch the extra volume of milk.

If you can, remove this aid and try frothing with it like that. Hopefully, your wand will still have a Steam Tip on the end of the Wand Proper and even though this results in the wand being considerably shorter, it is still possible to do a decent job.

Basically, its just the same procedure regardless of the size of the jug really..... Start the stretch with the top of the jug leaning slightly towards you and away from the wand and the tip immersed about 10-12mm under the surface of the milk, open the Steam Valve flat out and then lower the jug until the Tip is just below the surface of the milk.... adjust the angle of the jug slightly until you get that whirlpool happening and once it starts keep the jug height such that the Tip is always being held just below the milk surface until such time as you have enough foam developed and then raise the jug up as high as it will go, keeping the angle the same so as to maintain the whirlpool.

Keep this going until the milk temperature feels right or the thermometer hits about 55C. With a bit of luck, this will have created some reasonable micro-foam for you to get started. With a bit of practice youll be doing it with your eyes closed . All the best,

    Mal.

I think you have answered your own question there. 500ml for a domestic machine is probably asking too much. For my Expobar I use 300ml and 600ml jugs which are fine. That is for one to two drinks, I wouldnt want any bigger than the 600ml for mine. I am not familiar with your machine though so maybe it is stronger at steamer than mine but not by the sounds of it. A domestic machine will never be as strong as your commercial machien experience as you would expect.

    I hope my ramble helps.

    Cant get milk to spin

    Hi all,

I have a Nemox Dell Opera coffee machine (domestic machine) and cannot get the milk to spin. I use a 1litre jug with half filled with milk. I know to get silky textured milk i need the milk to spin, is the steam wand just not powerful enough? Do i need to use a smaller jug with less milk since there is less power or am i doing something wrong? (I can texture milk well on commercial machines)

    Thanks for your help
