  • Spoon MAN?!

    Ello Ello,

Whats your thoughts on baristi using a spoon when pouring milk from their jug?

Today I saw it again and its something I DONT LIKE!

I dont know why... I dont EVER use a spoon when pouring milk!

Is this lack of education or too much wrong education?

Whats your thoughts... This is concerning me a lot!

    Cheers! [smiley=beer.gif]

If the barista balances the spoon on his/her nose, then Im all for it - good to be able to juggle and make coffee at the same time...otherwise, there shouldnt be any need for a spoon!

As long as it is a good coffee I dont care. Its not that important really.

Theres more important things than whether a Barista uses a spoon or not.

often seen with over sized jugs where a pitcher of milk is steamed up and then froth distributed according to what is being made. Its one of those things though, although freepouring is the mark of a good barista, that does not mean that because someone uses a spoon that your coffee wont taste good.

        dont let it concern you.

          Its not that Im concerned about the quality of the coffee... These coffees are quite often acceptable, even really nice;

Im more concerned that this is becoming a norm... More and more I see this happening...

There is nothing like getting a latte delived to you at the table while the milk is still settling in the glass. I dont want my milk poured into a cup and them foam pulled on top with a spoon.

Will this guness effect be a thing of the past?

I hope were not heading down the wrong track, thats all!

          Cheers! [smiley=beer.gif]

I wonder if its not something to do with the woeful Gee brothers course? Apparently those two started off in something other than coffee, did some coffee stuff for a few years and are now the source of all wisdom for those that do their course. I remember reading an article by one of them that said that it was impossible to get proper milk without using a spoon.

Even so, I dont think that theres a problem if the resultant coffee is good. A better way of doing it, though, would be to only ever steam milk for two coffees at a time and to just split the jug. Its not hard.

            Cheers,

            Luca

I dont know if its the same thing, but if I create a "cottonball" in the milk, I use a knife over the top of the spout to stop this pouring out and turning the top of the drink white... I dont see a problem with this just makes it a bit more difficult to pour art without a free hand to tilt the glass...
Also works well for dividing milk between 2 cups without splitting with a separate pitcher... (allows you to easily get same amount of foam in each glass without much effort at all...

Whatever works for you... as long as it tastes good :P

In my opinion, its like training wheels on a bike, if someone isnt overly skilled, it will help their coffee as it gives more control. However, you wont improve to your potential if you continue to use a spoon.

Though not an exact science, in its usual form (excessive spoonage) it stuffs up the consistency and sort of sits ontop, not mixes together with the milk.

Also makes pretty hard for latte art (though latte art is negligible in my opinion)

... And you have to buy and wash the spoon, stuff that!

Funny you mention that, a customer a while back asked one of my baristas to use a spoon after watching her pour a few coffees because she liked her flat whites to be flat. So my barista does exactly that, balances the spoon on her nose and pours the coffee. One of the funniest things Ive seen any of my baristas do.

Did she tell any koala jokes while the spoon was on her nose?

                    Too funny.
